Belles Earn 81-78 Comeback Win over Texas Woman's

SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State women's basketball team came back from a nine point fourth quarter deficit to defeat Texas Woman's 81-78 in Lone Star Conference action on Sunday afternoon at Stephens Arena in the Junell Center.

The Belles (12-5, 5-2 LSC) dominated in the paint 44-18 and shot 51.4-percent from the field. Texas Woman's (16-4, 6-2 LSC) was able to sink 12 three pointers and hit 40.6-percent from the field. ASU scored 10 fast break points while TWU gained 20 points off turnovers and received 35 points from its bench.

"We have a resilient team," Angelo State head women's basketball coach Kevin Baker said. "That's something that we look at when recruiting, because it's either something that you have or that you don't. It would have been very easy for them to throw their hands up and walk away today because they were behind, but they did the opposite. They gutted up gritted their teeth and found a way to win. "

Jasmine Prophet had a career day against the LSC leader in blocks in TWU's Erin Maxwell. The junior scored a career high 23 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Prophet hit her first three pointer of her ASU career and added six points at the charity stripe. Taylor Dorsey and Brea Mitchell each chipped in 14 points. It is Mitchell's sixth straight game in double figures.

Texas Woman's extended its 66-60 lead at the end of the third quarter to 74-65 on a pair of free throws with 6:08 left in the fourth quarter. Dorsey took over scoring the next five points. The junior hit a jumper in the pain and was fouled on a fast break hitting the layup. Dorsey sank the free throw to make it 74-70. The Pioneers answered with free throws and extend its lead to 76-70 with 2:58 to go. TWU would only score two points the rest of the way.

Lexi Murphy hit one of ASU's three 3-pointers on the night and Dorsey again had success in the paint with a spin move in the pain to trim the deficit to 76-75. A missed TWU jumper gave ASU a chance to take its first lead since the 8:30 mark in the third quarter.

Prophet took the ball at the elbow and used a quick first step to lay the ball of the glass for the bucket and was fouled.  She hit the free throw to put ASU up 78-76. TWU drew a foul and hit both free throws to tie the game. Prophet again answered getting fouled on a shot. She drained both free throws for an 80-78 advantage and TWU committed a crucial turnover.

Christina Robinson picked off the TWU inbound pass and was fouled immediately. The junior hit one-of-two free throws to make it 81-78. TWU missed a desperation three point attempt as the buzzer went off.

The Belles started the game off by holding TWU to just 20.0-percent from the field. ASU was able to take a 19-12 lead in the first quarter behind nine points from Prophet. TWU was able to answer in the second quarter hitting 52.9-percent from the field and draining drained four 3-pointers. ASU was able to take a 36-35 lead in at the half as KeAnna Kelly hit a jumper in the paint.

TWU opened the second half on a 14-6 run to take a 49-43 lead with 5:58 to go in the third quarter. The Belles responded with an 11-5 run to tie the game at 54. The Pioneers ended the third quarter on a 12-6 run to take a 66-60 advantage into the fourth.

Four TWU players scored in double figures led by Kenesha Saygo's 14 points. Cienna Rodriguez added 13 points while Emily Spector sank 12 points. Morgan Easley chipped in 11 points for the Pioneers.

The Belles return to action on Saturday, Jan. 30 as Texas A&M-Kingsville will come to Stephens Arena at the Junell Center for a game. It will be televised on RamTV, Suddenlink channel six, and heard on 1260AM KKSA with Jeremy Bryant on the call.
