STEPHENVILLE, Texas – The Angelo State women's basketball dropped its Lone Star Conference opener on the road to Tarleton State 94-65 on Wednesday evening.
The Belles (7-4, 0-1 LSC) shot a season low 32.8-percent from the field and were held to a season low 65 points. Tarleton State (7-6, 1-2 LSC) hit an astounding 57.7-perent from the field and 47.6-percent from the three point line. The TexAnns dominated in the paint by a score of 50-26 and 22-4 in fast break points.
"Unfortunately, we didn't play well and I hope that we can respond on Saturday," Angelo State's head women's basketball coach Kevin Baker said. "We dared them to make perimeter shots and Tarleton State did. We have to move on and we can't dwell on it. This is not how we wanted to start LSC play but it is about the next game."
Jasmine Prophet was the only Belle in double figures with 11 points. The junior set a career high with five blocks and tied a season high with nine rebounds. Fabrianna Dixon scored a career high nine points while KeAnna Kelly, Brea Mitchell and Diamalises Rivera added eight points each.
The Belles went down early to start the game 7-2 before a basket by Rivera sparked a 7-2 run tied the game at nine with 4:36 left in the first quarter. ASU would be held to five points while TSU reeled off 13 points to take a 22-14 lead at the end of the first quarter.
A three pointer by KeAnna Kelly cut TSU's lead to 27-19 with 8:33 in the second and Taylor Dorsey trimmed it to single digits at 32-24 but Tarleton State continued pushed the lead to 16 points at the break. The TexAnns ended the second quarter on a 17-9 run for a 49-33 advantage.
The second half started with ASU having its best quarter of the game with 20 points in third quarter but TSU held ASU to just 12 points in the fourth for a 94-65 win.
Bailey Wipff led TSU with 22 points and Meagan O'Dell added 21.
The Belles will return to the court on Saturday, Jan. 13 at Stephens Arena in the Junell Center to host Texas A&M-Commerce at 2 p.m.
