Belles Bounce Back with 82-78 Win over Texas A&M-Commerce

SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State women's basketball held on to defeat Texas A&M-Commerce 82-78 for its first LSC win of the season on Saturday afternoon at Stephens Arena inside the Junell Center.

The Belles (8-4, 1-1 LSC) hit 51.7-precent from the field and improved to 6-1 at home this season. Texas A&M-Commerce (7-6, 1-1 LSC) were limited to 40.8-percent from the field but was able to score 42 points in the paint and 26 points off 21 ASU turnovers. Angelo State hit six three pointers and was 16-for-21 from the charity stripe. The 24 assists by the Belles were a season high.

"I am proud of this team," Angelo State head women's basketball coach Kevin Baker said. "They were resilient today. There were some serious momentum shifts in this game. To see this team get some big defensive stops with the game tied at 75 and make great offensive plays was beautiful to watch and it was fun to be a part of."

The Belles were led by three players that scored at least 20 points. Taylor Dorsey led all scorers with 23 points and dished out 10 assists for her second double-double of the season. Brea Mitchell recorded her second double-double of the season with a career high 21 points and 10 rebounds. KeAnna Kelly contributed a season high 20 points. The sophomore drained four 3-pointers and was seven-for-nine from the floor.

Angelo State held an 18 point third quarter but it quickly diminished as TAMUC ended the third quarter on a 20-1 run to take a 59-58 advantage into the fourth quarter. The Lions continued to maintain a lead of 73-68 with 2:47 left in the game. Dorsey converted an old fashioned three point play with a jumper and a free throw to cut the lead to 73-71. One of TAMUC's quick buckets made it 75-71 and Kelly answered with one of her four 3-pointers to make it a one point game. Dorsey was fouled and made one-of-two free throws to tie the game with 1:41 to go in the game.

The Belles defense stepped up and held the Lions to just a three pointer. Dorsey hit a jumper and after a missed TAMUC shot, Mitchell found Kelly down the court for a wide open layup to make it 79-75. Mitchell sunk a pair of free throws with seven second left and Kelly secured the win with a free throw after a TAMUC three pointer.

The Belles had led the entire game after shooting 54.5-percent in the first half and building a 47-34 lead at the half. The lead swelled to 18 in the third quarter with 5:45 to go before TAMUC went on its run. The Lions shot 43.8-percent from the floor while limiting ASU to just 28.6 in the third quarter. ASU committed five turnovers in the third and only scored 11 points.

Five Lions scored in double figures led by Gabby Scott's 15 points.

The Belles will host No. 1 West Texas A&M on Wednesday, Jan. 13 at 5:30 p.m. at Stephens Arena inside the Junell Center.
