SAN ANGELO -Â The Angelo State volleyball team held on to its undefeated home record Friday night, defeating West Texas A&M in four sets.
For the Belles (22-2, 13-1), the win was their ninth in a row, dating back to and October 1 victory over Texas A&M Kingsville, and moved them to 11-0 in the Junell Center this season.
ASU held off WT with a strong defensive attack, holding the Lady Buffs to a paltry .123 hitting percentage on the night. The defense was led by libero Mallory Davidson who had a career-high 33 digs in the match.
"I felt great out there," Davidson said. "A lot of the credit goes to my teammates because if everyone is in the right spot it makes my job a whole lot easier. I'm thankful that they do their jobs so I can do mine."
Not far behind the sophomore libero was outside hitter Brianna Sotello, who was just one shy of her career high with 28 digs. Mallory Blauser (20), Meghan Parker(14) and Michaela Sifuentes (11) all finished with double-digit digs on the night as well.
Morgan Seaton and Tulani Titley led the defense at the net, chipping in four block each, and the Belles got two apiece from Meghan Parker and Abbie Lynn as well.
Parker had a strong performance offensively as well, earning 50 assists for her third-best showing this season and earning the freshman another double-double. All of the assists meant ASU had three players with double digit kills, led by senior Mallory Blauser and followed close behind by Sotello and Lynn.
Blauser was first on the team with 18 total kills and Sotello finished with 12, earning both a double-double, and Lynn was close behind with 10. Freshman Tulani Titley tied her season-high with eight kills on the night and Morgan Seaton contributed six as well.
The Lady Buffs started the match out with all of the momentum, winning the first three points. ASU came storming back with five points of its own, however, and would never give up the lead the rest of the set. WT pulled within two at 14-12, but the Belles rattled off three straight points in response to regain some breathing room. Angelo State would score six straight points to end the set, winning 25-15.
West Texas A&M took the lead early again in set two, scoring eight of the first 12 points, but the Belles were able to slowly chip away and tie the game at 11. The Belles did not take the lead in the set until a three-point run put them up 17-16, but they didn't look back after that. The match ended on an 8-3 run in favor of the Belles, and ASU took a two-set lead into the break.
The third set was the first that the Belles started out with a lead, scoring three of the first three points, but they would be unable to hold on. The set was back and forth until WT went on an 8-2 run with the game tied at 13, eventually winning the set 25-22.
ASU scored the first two point of the fourth set, but it was tight early on. A 6-2 run by the Belles put them up 13-10, but the Lady Buffs would keep it close, eventually tying the match at 22 all. Angelo State scored the next three points, though, and the Belles defeated the only LSC team to have beaten them so far this season.
"WT put up a good fight," ASU head volleyball coach Chuck Waddington said. "They're a really good team and really well-disciplined. What I liked most is that we out-executed a team that is traditionally really good at executing at the ends of matches. I was very happy with how we finished."
ASU will be at home again next, facing Texas Permian Basin at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Stephens Arena at the Junell Center.
