SAN ANGELO -Â The No. 16 Angelo State men's basketball team downed St. Mary', 83-65, in the Stephens Arena at the Junell center on Friday night.
The Rams moved to 3-0 on the season with Friday's victory as it out-scored the Rattlers 25-6 on fast break points and 36-26 on points in the paint. Angelo State was 52.9 percent from inside the arc and 44.4 percent from deep. With the loss, St. Mary's drops to a 2-4 record on the season.
"Our guys did an excellent job at executing tonight with the great scouting report Coach David Lewis provided us with," commented ASU Head Men's Basketball Coach Cinco Boone. " We held them to 25 percent shooting in the first half and I thought that was great and our three consecutive stops got us off to a good start. They made a little run at us in the second, but Quay [King] got off three 3-pointers and got the momentum shifted back our way to close out the game."
ASU had three players score in double-digits, with Quay King sinking a career tying and team leading 25 points on the night. The senior also led the defense, pocketing three steals. Recording a career-high 39 minutes on the court, Prince Foster added 18 points. Rounding out the offensive leaders Thomas Tshikaya dropped in 12 points, while also adding a team second six boards.
Newcomer Michael Thomas headed the defensive efforts grabbing a team most eight boards. The big man also recorded a season high and team-leading three blocks. Finally, Lorenzo Dillard was one point and one assist away from marking his first double-double of the season as he chalked a team leading nine assists and team fourth nine points.
Foster would get things going for the Rams in the first half as he launched a 3 -pointer from deep to put the first points on the board. This also jump started a 16-2 run that saw a big slam from Tshikaya and six of the 16 points from King. At the 12:50 mark a King jumper would give ASU an 18-3 lead which would be its largest of the first half. The Rattlers would rally and pull to within eight with 7:27 on the clock, but a pair of free throws from Chase Riley and a pull up 3 -pointer off a fast break from Gustavs Puhovs would get the Rams rolling again. Riley would then hit a three at the 1:47 mark to close out the scoring for the first half and the two teams would head into the locker room with ASU leading 32-24.
The Rams would continue to pick up the momentum as it opened the second half with a blocked shot by Thomas that would lead to a fast break layup from Lorenzo Dillard. StMU would answer by closing the ASU lead to just four (47-43) with12:40 on the clock. However, three straight 3 -pointers from King stifled the Rattlers run. This would be followed by a Tshikaya steal and a jumper and one from Foster to place Angelo State back in control. Another Foster jumper at the 6:26 mark would give the Rams its greatest lead of the game (22) with 67-45 on the board. With nine seconds left in the game, Tshikaya rolled the ball in on a fast break layup for the final ASU points of the game.
The Rams hit the road to once again face St. Mary's in a rematch in San Antonio, Texas on December 1 at 6 P.M.Â
