SAN ANGELO, Texas – On Wednesday evening the No.11/16 Angelo State men's basketball team defeated Cameron, 82-75, in the Stephens Arena at the Junell Center for the program's sixth 20 win season and a share of first place in the Lone Star Conference.
The Rams improved its record to 20-4, 8-4 LSC with the win as they honored Omari Gudul, Stedman Allen and Tre Bennett on senior night. The outcome of the game also moved ASU into a four way tie between Midwestern, Cameron and West Texas A&M for first place in the Lone Star Conference. The team's offense shot 45.8 percent from the field, 81.5 percent from the charity stripe and had four players score double figures. It outscored Cameron in bench points (17-5), points off of turnovers (14-10) and fast break points (17-8). The Rams also led throughout the entire game. With the loss, the Aggies dropped to 15-9 overall and 8-4 in the LSC.
"The win was a group effort that was really inspired by our three seniors," said ASU head basketball coach Cinco Boone. "I'm so proud of the great job our seniors did tonight. I thought our defense play really well tonight. We out rebounded them tonight and that was a huge key for us. We also got to the foul line and converted. From here our destiny is in our own hands for the next two games and we are playing for seating in the conference and regional tournaments. "
As the team was celebrating senior night, it was only appropriate that three year senior Gudul got things started for the Rams with a fast break jumper that headed up a 9-0 run right out of the gates. The run also saw a contribution from fellow senior Allen as he sunk a jumper from in the paint. Then at the 15:12 mark the final senior on the team, Bennett, scored his first points by knocking down a 3-pointer off of a fast break to place the score at 12-5 in favor of ASU. Though the Aggies would continue to battle throughout the first half, they could not bring the score closer to than within a possession. Angelo State would enter the break with a 32-26 lead.
In the second half the Rams continued to fire on all cylinders as a 16-6 run led by an Allen Jumper pushed the lead to as much as 15 points at the 12:13 mark with a score of 52-37. The Rams improved its shooting to a stellar 50 percent from the field and 89.5 percent from the stripe in this half. Angelo State's DeVonte' Pratt close out the game for the Rams sinking a pair of free throws.
Gudul earned the player of the game honors as he marked his fifth double-double this season. He finished the game as one of four players with double figure points (10) and led the defense pulling down 12 rebounds for the game. This was the senior's ninth game of the season with at least 10 boards and 10 th game scoring at least 10 points.
Bennett led the squad scoring 19 points for his 15th consecutive game with double-figure points. He shot 7-of-14 from the field, 3-of -8 from beyond the arc and 2-for-2 from the line. The senior also led the team with six assists.
Fellow senior, Allen followed closely behind marking an 18 point game. The forward also recorded his 15th straight game with double-digits points, as he knocked down 7-of-11 from the field and 4-of-5 from the free throw line. Defensively, he grabbed eight boards and pocketed a steal for the night.
Finally, Prince Foster marked a solid game on both sides of the ball. Offensively, he scored 10 points for his fourth consecutive double figure game. He also led the defensive efforts with a pair of steal and a pair of block for the night.
The Rams will now hit the road to face No. 21/22 Midwestern State on Saturday, February 20 at 6 p.m., and then follow that up with a final road game against Texas A&M –Kingsville on Saturday, February 27 at 7:30 p.m. Both games will be broadcasted live on 1260AM KKSA with Jeremy Bryant on the call.
