CANYON, Texas – The Angelo State baseball team split Saturday evening's doubleheader with West Texas A&M (3-2, 2-4) and trail 2-1 in the four game series.
The Rams moved to 14-10 overall and 7-4 in the Lone Star Conference with the split. Pitcher Bryce Zak claimed the win in game one and improved 5-1 on the season. While Paxton DeLaGarza was credited with his first loss of the season from the hill and now sits at 2-1. ASU recorded eight hits in game one and four in game two. The Buffs now sit at 19-6, 8-3 LSC entering Sunday's series finale.
Angelo State trailed 2-1 entering the top of the seventh inning of game one of the doubleheader, when Christian Abilla got things rolling with a single down the left side. Jarryd Klemm followed with a single of his own placing two men on base. After Michael Urquidi laid down a sac bunt that moved the runners to second and third, Nathan Ruane grounded out to the shortstop which pushed Abilla across to bring the score even at 2. Senior David Goggin brought home the go-ahead run with a sac fly to left. The Buffs would be unable to rally in the bottom of the inning giving the Rams the win and tying the series at one game apiece. Â
WT got things started in the first game of the doubleheader, posting a run in both the third and the fourth innings. Ram outfielder Urquidi placed ASU on the board with an RBI double in the top of the fifth that plated Abilla.
Zak struck out seven and allowed two runs off of seven hits and only walked two in seven innings of work. Abilla led the Rams at the plate turning in a 3-for-3 performance scoring two of three runs for the game. Goggin, Ruane and Urquidi all finished game one each earning an RBI. Â Â Â
In the second game of the doubleheader, Goggin pushed a single through the left side to cross Ruane and place the Rams on the board first. In the fourth ASU would take a 2-0 lead as Tyler Coolbaugh plated Abilla with a sac bun to the pitcher. This would be all the scoring Angelo State would do for the game. The Buffs crossed two in the bottom of the fourth and another two in the sixth to take the win.
DeLaGarza tossed five innings striking out one and giving up three runs off of seven hits. At the plate, he was 1-for-2 and knocked the teams only double of the game. Goggin added his second RBI of the day and Coolbaugh recorded his first. Â
