Rams Fall to Tarleton State in First Game of Series

STEPHENVILLE, Texas – The Angelo State baseball team dropped Friday afternoon's game to Tarleton State, 3-2.

With the loss, the Rams fall to 18-13 overall and 11-6 in the Lone Star Conference.  Angelo State matched the Tarleton State with four hits for the game, while they were unable to take advantage of three Texan errors. Starting Rams pitcher Matt Shannon (3-4) tossed a complete game however fell just short of the win. TSU moved to 13-16, 7-10 LSC with Friday's win and pitcher, Jacob French (3-2), was awarded the victory.

"It was a frustrating loss today," Commented head coach Kevin Brooks. "Matt Shannon pitched well, but his three walks ended up hurting us in the end. We are still in the series and we can still take three out of four. We need to come out tomorrow, get after it and make sure we play solid in both games."

Tarleton struck first scoring off of a sac fly to right field in the first inning. It would not be until the fifth that Steven Pinales plated Jay Gonzales with a deep sac fly to the TSU left fielder. With the game tied at 1-1, a wild pitch from French advanced the runners and allowed Christian Abilla to cross to give the Rams the lead. Tarleton would add a pair of runs in the sixth with two RBI singles to finalize the score in its favor, 3-2.

Shannon tossed eight innings from the hill, gave up three runs on four hits and struck out three Texan hitters. Sam Kohler, Elias Aguirre, Jarryd Klemm and Gonzales all tallied a hit each for the Rams, while Coolbaugh drew a team leading three walks. Gonzales and Abilla were each plated once for the Rams pair of runs. Finally, Pinales recorded the squads only RBI for the game

The Rams return to the Cecil Ballow Baseball Complex tomorrow at 1 p.m. for a doubleheader. Both games will be broadcasted live on 1260 KKSA with Jeremy Bryant on the call.
