SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State No. 12 men's team and No. 25 women's team qualified a total of 12 student-athletes to the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships next week in Bradenton, Florida.
The Rams have six individuals and one relay while the Rambelles have four individuals. All four Rambelles will be making their first appearance at the national meet while five of the eight Rams are making their national debut. The men moved up a spot to No. 12 while the women dropped to No. 25 in the most recent USTFCCCA ranking.
"We are excited about the group that got in the national meet," Angelo State head track & field coach James Reid said. "They have been working all year towards this opportunity. We look forward to seeing this group compete at the national meet."
Asael Arad, Luis Perez and Lance Andrews return to the national meet after earning All-American honors last season. It will be Arad's third straight trip to the national meet in the javelin. Perez is attending his fourth consecutive meet in the 400-meters and the 4x400-meter relay. He also added the 200-meters to his schedule at the meet. He has earned All-American honors at all three meets. Andrews makes his second straight national meet as a member of the 4x400-meter relay.
Kami Norton will have a busy schedule in her first NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships. A few months after qualifying for the indoor championships, the sophomore qualified in the 100-meter hurdles, 400-meters hurdles, long jump and the heptathlon.
Ashley Dendy and Adrine Monagi will join Norton in the heptathlon. Both are making their debut at the national meet.
Also qualifying for her first NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships is Kaitlin Lumpkins. It is the sophomore's first appearance at the national meet.
Alex Borzelin is one of five freshmen that qualified for the 400-meter hurdles. He has the fastest time of all the freshmen entered and the fifth overall. He will also run a leg on the 4x400-meter relay.
Anthony Yancy will be a part of the 4x400-meter relay. He is making his first appearance at the meet after spending two years on the Ram football team.
Harry Maslen becomes one of four freshmen that qualified for the decathlon. He is also the only Lone Star Conference representative in the meet.
Peniel Richard is one of the 19 triple jumpers that made the national meet. The freshman is sitting at No. 13 nationally.Â
Edward Simmons is set to compete in the 100-meters. The junior is one of three LSC representatives in the race and is ranked No. 16 going into the meet.
The national meet held at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, will begin on Thursday, May 26 with the decathlon and heptathlon and conclude on Saturday, May 28.
