CARY, North Carolina – The Angelo State baseball team fell to the University of Southern Indiana, 1-0, in its second consecutive game decided by a single run and was eliminated from the NCAA DII College World Series on Monday afternoon.
With the loss, the Rams complete the 2016 season with a 39-22 overall record. Reliever Graylon Brown (6-7) was credited with the loss. Offensively, the team out hit the Screaming Eagles, 5-4, however left six runners stranded to USI's five. Southern Indiana will advance with the win. ASU was playing in its third DII College World Series under Head Coach Kevin Brooks after sweeping its way through the NCAA DII South Central Championship last weekend.Â
"We had our chances early in the game and we just did not execute when it was necessary," commented head coach Brooks. "Matt [Shannon] was masterful on the mound and he went out and did a tremendous job for us. This was really a repeat of Saturday's game You do not get a lot of scoring opportunities here at the College World Series and when you do you need to cash them in and we did not."  Â
For the second consecutive game the Rams found themselves playing in a game that would remain scoreless until the very late innings. Entering the bottom of the ninth, with the bases loaded USI drove a single up the middle to score the game winner. The ASU offensive attack failed to capitalize on a couple of scoring opportunities that came in the third and eight innings.
Starting pitcher Matt Shannon capped his sophomore season putting in 7 1/3 innings of work in the final game of 2016. He gave up zero runs on only two hits allowed, and struck out five. He finishes the season with 118 strikeouts. Brown entered in the eighth and completed the game on the mound for the Rams. He gave up a pair of hits and zero earned runs.
At the dish, David Goggin and Jarryd Klemm led the team with two hits each. Fellow senior, Sam Kohler, was the only other Ram to record a hit during Monday's game.Â
