Belles Upset No. 2 Wheeling Jesuit in Split of Final Two Tournament Matches

DENVER, Colorado – The No. 19 Angelo State volleyball team upset No. 2 Wheeling Jesuit (21-25, 25-21, 25-23, 25-19) in its final match of the Colorado Premier Tournament, after dropping its first match to No. 5 Southwest Minnesota State (22-25, 20-25, 25-27).

The Belles improved to 9-1 with Saturday's outcomes.  No.2 WJU is now the highest ranked team that ASU has upset in Coach Chuck Waddington's tenure as Head Coach. With the loss the Cardinals fell to 6-2 on the season. The loss to No. 5 Southwest Minnesota State was the first loss of the Belles 2016 campaign. The Mustangs improved to 6-1 with the win.

"So incredibly proud of our team for bouncing back after losing to SW Minnesota State," ASU head volleyball coach Chuck Waddington said. "WJ is an incredibly talented team. They came out in set one and really did a lot of things to get us out of our rhythm. We made some key adjustments in set 2 and came out with the win. Tough serving was key in our comeback. Morgan Seaton set the tone at service line, serving bullets and disrupting their offense. The rest of our team followed suit."

She set a season high firing in 28 kills against No. 2 WJU and has now recorded a pair of games on the season with at least 20. Also during this match she recorded a team high .329 attack percentage and earned her third double-double on the season recording 12 digs. The senior has now improves her kills per set average to 4.71.

"Mallory was virtually unstoppable offensively all weekend,"  Waddington said. "She really established herself as an elite attacker against some of the best teams out there. So proud of her for leading this team and demanding excellence from herself and her teammates."

Brianna Sotello and Abbie Lynn followed closely behind. Sotello recorded 24 total kills on the day and her fifth double-double of the season as he recorded a season high 22 digs against the No. 2 Cardinals. She recorded a total of 35 digs between the two matches. Lynn added 16 total kills and three blocks to her overall numbers. She is now third on the team's kill list with a total of 81.
