STEPHENVILLE, Texas - The Angelo State volleyball team remained undefeated in conference play after defeating Tarleton State (25-23, 25-22, 26-24) in straight sets Tuesday night in Stephenville.
Winning on the same court where they won the Lone Star Conference Championship last season, the Belles (12-1, 3-0) earned their ninth sweep of the season and handed the TexAnns (10-1, 2-1)Â their first loss of season.
ASU dominated offensively in the match, hitting at a .315 clip in the three sets combined while holding Tarleton State to a hitting percentage of just .194.
Brianna Sotello led the Belles attack, notching 16 kills at a clip of .293 in the match, and Mallory Blauser followed closely behind with 14 and a hitting percentage of .306. Blauser also added in 15 digs for a double-double and Sotello had seven digs of her own.
Setting up the kills for ASU was freshman Meghan Parker, who finished with 38 assists and contributed defensively with five digs as well. Parker also scored a couple points herself, adding in two kills to her total tally.
Libero Brooke Robertson finished second on the team in digs with 12 and middle blocker Morgan Seaton led the Belles with five blocks throughout the night, and the junior added in five kills as well.
The Belles started first set off slow, going point for point with the TexAnns until a 3-0 run from Tarleton State put the Belles in a 15-12 hole and forced ASU to call a timeout. The Belles got all three points back right out of the timeout and the two teams stayed neck and neck again until Angelo State had a small run to go up 22-20. The two-point cushion allowed the Belles to keep TSU at bay, and a kill from Blauser put the set away, 25-23.
Set No. 2 started off with much of the same, as neither team was able to put together a run of more than two points. ASU pulled ahead first with a kill from Seaton and a TSU attack error putting the Belles up 7-5, but the TexAnns quickly regained the ground with back-to-back kills of their own.
With the set tied at 11, the Belles took control of the match with three straight points, including a kill from Abbie Lynn and block from Sotello and Seaton. The TexAnns were never able to pull level again in the match, and two straight kills from Blauser ended the set and gave the Belles a commanding 2-0 lead.
ASU stayed hot in the third set, getting back-to-back kills from Lynn to start off and opening up an early 7-2 lead. Tarleton State used a three-point run of its own to pull within two at 9-7, and then evened the score up at 10-10.
The TexAnns then got a two-point lead of their own at 15-13, but the Belles rattled off three straight points and grabbed the lead again. TSU took the lead again with two straight points, but the Belles stopped run with four points over their own to pull ahead 22-20. Tarleton made one last run to tie the match at 24-all, but ASU got the next two points, ending the match on a Sotello kill.
The Belles will be on the road again for their next two matches, facing UT Permian Basin at 7 p.m. Friday in Odessa and then taking on West Texas A&M at 2 p.m. in Canyon on Saturday.
