No. 2/6 Belles Rebound on the Road with 96-80 Win at UTPB

ODESSA, Texas – The No. 2/6 Angelo State women's basketball team scored a season high to beat Texas Permian Basin 96-83 on Saturday afternoon in Odessa, Texas.

The Belles (13-1, 7-1 LSC) hit a season high percentage from the field (55.2 percent) and the 3-point line (60 percent). The Falcons (5-9, 2-6 LSC) was able to stick around by sinking 12 three pointers and outrebounded ASU 36-31. ASU was able to get to the foul line 36 times and made 26 and dominated in the paint 44-28. The Belles also forced 18 turnovers and turned it into 24 points.

"I was really pleased with how we played," Angelo State head women's basketball coach Kevin Baker said. "They showed some real resiliency because when you come off a loss you wonder how you are going to perform in the next game. I thought we played really well and I thought we took UTPB's best punches. They hit a lot of big shots but we kept chopping wood and kept responding for the win."

Five players, including all four seniors, scored in double figures for the Belles. Christina Robinson led all scorers with a career-high 23 points and recorded six assists. Jasmine Prophet and Taylor Dorsey each added 21 points and five rebounds. Lexi Murphy scored 12 points while grabbing five boards and Madi Greenwood chipped in 10 points.

The Belles came out of halftime with a 43-40 lead but saw its lead dissipate quickly. The Falcons went on a 12-2 run by hitting four consecutive 3-pointers for a 52-47 advantage. Murphy hit a jumper and after a Dorsey steal, Prophet made a layup to spark a 10-0 run in response. Robinson sliced through the lane for a layup and to put the Belles up 53-52.  Murphy scored six of the 10 points in the run to give ASU a 57-52 lead with 5:04 to go. The Falcons battled back down 59-57 but a 15-5 run over the final 4:05 opened it up for the Belles. Madi Greenwod and Robinson sank 3-pointers during the run to give ASU a 74-62 lead going into the fourth quarter.

ASU opened the fourth quarter on a 10-2 run highlighted by three pointers from Greenwood and Dorsey on its way to its largest lead of the game at 86-67 with 6:37 left to play. The Belles would lead by double digits the rest of the way to secure a 96-83 win.

The second quarter featured six lead changes and five times the score was tied. Neither team led by more than four points. A Prophet jumper pushed ASU's lead to four at 38-32 with 3:26 to go. The game would be tied three more times before Robinson scored the last four points of the half to put ASU up 43-39.

UTPB used four 3-pointers to keep up with the Belles in the first quarter. The Belles trailed until the 3:21 mark and Dorsey hit a 3-pointer to put ASU up 14-12. Angelo State built its largest lead of the first quarter at 20-15 with 1:30 to play but UTPB scored the final five points to tie the game.

The Belles will return home to Stephens Arena at the Junell Center to play Western New Mexico on Thursday, Jan. 19 at 7:30 p.m.
