Belles Suffer First Home Loss in OT Thriller

SAN ANGELO - The Angelo State women's basketball team was handed its first home loss of the 2016-2017 season Saturday afternoon, falling to Eastern New Mexico 76-72 in the Stephens Arena at the Junell Center.

The Belles (14-2, 7-2 LSC) shot made just 30 percent of their shots which was down from their season average of 44 percent, while the Greyhounds (14-3, 10-0 LSC) hit on 35 percent of their attempts in the matchup to earn the win.

ASU did outrebound its opponent in the game, grabbing 55 boards, and  senior forward Lexi Murphy led the way with 11 by herself. Murphy also finished the game with 12 points, earning her first double-double of the season.

First on the team in scoring against the Greyhounds was senior Jasmine Prophet with 20 total points, despite fouling out near the end of the fourth quarter. The senior was helped by a 6-6 showing at the charity stripe, but the success at the line did not translate to the rest of the team as the Belles missed 10 free throws. Prophet led the way on defense as well with three blocks, and finished the game just two boards shy of her third double-double of the season.

Taylor Dorsey finished right behind Prophet with 19 points in the matchup, playing a team-high 45 minutes in the game. The Fort Worth native had a good day on the boards as well, grabbing a season-high seven rebounds.

Eastern New Mexico got on the board first in the game, scoring two on a jumper from Johna McClelland, but the Belles bounced back and grabbed their first lead at 5-4 on a layup from Christina Robinson. The quarter was a back and forth battle, as both teams shot just over 30 percent, and a pair of ENMU free throws with one second left in the period would put them on top 14-13 at the first break.

Neither team could score early in the second quarter, but the  Greyhounds finally broke the stalemate three minutes in with a free throw. ASU tied the game backup with a pair of free throws from Madi Greenwood less than a minute later. Eastern New Mexico got its biggest lead of the half with 5:18 left as back-to-back fast break scores from Mikaehla Connor pushing the gap to seven points.

The Belles were still down with 1:32 to play, but closed out the quarter on a 6-0 run, tying the game at 29-all heading into before heading into the locker room.

The back-and-forth battle continued in the third quarter, as neither team gained more than a six-point advantage, but the Belles finished the period with a 46-44 lead. ENMU continued to match ASU blow for blow in the final period of regulation, but junior Madi Greenwood found the bottom of the net on a three-pointer with 1:32 remaining to give the Belles a five-point advantage. The Greyhounds responded by knocking down three free throws, and with 16 seconds remaining got a clutch three-pointer from Brandi Gomez to tie the contest and send it to overtime.

A three-pointer from Dorsey gave Angelo State a two-point lead early in the overtime period, but ENMU responded with a 6-0 run that gave them a lead they would never relinquish, eventually winning the game by four.

Angelo State will face a quick turnaround after its second loss of the season, hitting the road to take on Texas A&M-Kingsville at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in Kingsville, Texas. The game can be heard live on 1260AM KKSA with Jeremy Bryant on the call.
