SAN ANGELO - The Angelo State women's basketball felt right at home again Thursday night, rebounding after a tough road trip with an 88-55 win over Texas Permian Basin in the Stephens Arena at the Junell Center.
The Belles (19-4, 13-4 LSC) dominated the Falcons (7-17, 3-14) in the paint in the game, scoring 42 points inside while UTPB got just 18.
With all of the baskets from close range, ASU shot better than 54 percent from the field, all while holding UTPB to just 34 percent on the night.
Leading the way for the Belles was point guard Christina Robinson who had 18 on the night. Keanna Kelly finished right behind Robinson with a season-high 16 points against the Falcons and Taylor Dorsey once again reached the double-digit scoring mark with 14. Dorsey also led the team in assists with six and had seven rebouunds, followed closely by Lexi Murphy who five assists and was the team's leading rebounder with eight. Â
Bria Frierson and Chenelle Pelle both helped the Belles' cause in the paint as well, shooting a combined 8-of-13 for eight and nine points respectively. Off the bench, Madi Greenwood had eight as well, and Jasmine Prophet chipped in with seven.
The Belles had a comfortable lead not long after the game started, scoring nine straight points before the Falcons got on the board. Overall, UTPB scored just six points in the opening period, allowing ASU to build a 16-point lead by the end of the quarter.
UTPB finally got to the double-digit mar on a three-pointer from Brianna Caron with 7:07 left in the second quarter, but by that time the Belles had pushed the gap to 20 points. Dorsey scored four straight points to push the lead to 21 with 4 minutes left, and that's exactly where the gap would be when the two teams went into the locker room.
After the break, the Belles opened on an 15-6 run to push the lead out to 27 with just over 6 minutes left in the third quarter. Less than a minute later, Kelly hit back-to-back three-pointers followed by a three from Robinson and a free throw from Greenwood that opened the gap up to 35. With three minutes left in the third quarter the lead would grow to 38, its largest at any point in the game. Caro hit another three-pointer with 10 seconds left in the period to cut the lead to 35 heading into the final quarter.
With mostly subs in during the fourth quarter, the Belles held onto the massive lead they had built. The closest the Falcons got in the final period was 27, but a 7-0 lead from ASU took it back past 30, and the Belles would close out the game with the lead at 33.
ASU will return to the court at 2 p.m. Saturday for the last game of the season in the Stephens Arena at the Junell Center.
