STEPHENVILLEÂ - The Angelo State baseball team dropped its first Lone Star Conference game of the season Saturday in Stephenville, 8-3 to Tarleton State.
The Rams (24-5, 6-1 LSC) stranded collected eight hits on the day to 10 for the Texans (17-14, 1-6 LSC), but ASU was unable to capitalize, stranding 10 runners in the game.
Jonathan Soberanes led off the game for the Rams ripping a double into the outfield to open the game. Elias Aguirre followed with a sacrifice bunt and Mitch Henshaw followed with an RBI single to give ASU an early lead.
Tarleton State responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the first off Angelo State starter Jake Mathys, and the Texans would never lose the lead again in the game.
Jay Gonzales got one of the runs back for the Rams in the top of the third inning with his first home run of the year off the scoreboard in left center field to cut the deficit to just one, but Tarleton State responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning.
ASU scored again in the fifth after Steven Pinales tripled to lead off the inning and scored on a fielder's choice from Nick Novak later in the inning. The outfielder finished the day 3-for-4 with the one run scored.
TSU added runs in the fifth and sixth innings to increase their lead to 8-3. The Rams used Blake Barr and Jhonatan Del Rosario in the seventh and eighth inning, respectively, and both shut down the Texans. Del Rosario had one strikeout in his inning on the mound.
The Rams will go for the series win at 1 p.m. on Sunday at Cecil Ballow Stadium.
