Belles Begin Road Tour With Sweep of Adams State to Remain Undefeated

ALAMOSA, Colo. - The Angelo State volleyball team continued its undefeated streak on Wednesday afternoon with its first road win, a sweep over Adams State (25-16, 25-18, 30-27).

The Belles now improve to 5-0 on the season as they prepare to head to Denver for the Colorado Premier Tournament.  The ASU offense turned in a .246 clip for the match, while its stout defense held the Grizzlies to a .129 attack percentage. With the loss, Adams State falls to 2-3 on the season.

"This was a good start to our road trip," commented ASU Head Volleyball Coach Chuck Waddington. "Morgan [Seaton] was pretty effective in the middle for us, while Brianna [Sotello] was really terminal for us in the first two sets and then late with the final set on the line. Bailey [Drum] also had a nice day for us offensively. We really set the tone in the first two set with our blocking and that was nice to see."

Brianna Sotello led the Angelo State attack with 12 kills marking her fifth consecutive double-digit match of the season. She also added seven digs and three blocks to her numbers. Bailey Drum followed with a career high performance racking up nine kills and a .571 clip.

Also assisting the Belles offensive success were Morgan Seaton and Meghan Parker. Seaton racked up team third seven kills with a .500 attack percentage. The senior also recorded a pair of blocks and an ace. Setting for Angelo State, Sophomore Meghan Parker assisted the ASU attack with a stellar 24 assists on the day.

Micheala Sifuentes and Anna Graham anchored the Belles defense. Sifuentes yet again marked another career high for the second consecutive match as she turned in 23 digs. Graham patrolled the net tallying a team most five total blocks. The pair assisted the defense in holding the Grizzlies to under a .100 attack percentage in the first two sets.

The Belles started of the match strong with a 10-2 right out of the gate. This was headed by a couple of key swings from Drum and three big blocks from Sundara Chinn, Seaton and Drum. The Grizzles would fight back and cut the ASU lead to 13-8, until an Adams State attack error and a solo block from Seaton set ASU back on the scoring path. Senior Abbie Lynn would close out the set in the Belles favor with a kill.

Feeding off its moment from the first set ASU's Seaton would put the first point on the board. Keeping the match close, Adams State would pull to within one, 6-5, before a Drum kill would set the Belles off on another lengthy 10-1 run. The Grizzlies then manufactured several consecutive points, however ASU would be able to fend off the advance and head into the break with a 2-0 set lead off a final kill from Sotello.

In an attempt to take the third set and clos the 2-0 gap, Adams State came out of intermission operating on all cylinders. The Grizzlies fended off multiple Belle advances; however, several timely kills from middle blocker Tulani Titley would keep ASU within striking distance. With a score of 24-23, Adams State would just need a point to take the set, but an untimely error and a kill from Sotello would finally turn the tables and Angelo State would take its first lead of the set. The Belles would hold off an Adams State rebound and would take the match with a pair of Grizzly attack errors.

Angelo State now heads to Denver where it will open the Colorado Premier Tournament with Florida Southern on Friday, September 9 at noon (CST) and continue later on that day with host Metropolitan State at 3:30 p.m. (CST). The outcome of these two matches will determine which teams the Belles will face on Saturday.
