Norton named NCAA Woman of the Year finalist

SAN ANGELO - Angelo State track and field athlete Kami Norton has been named a finalist for the NCAA Woman of the Year award, the association announced Tuesday. The winner will be announced on October 28th in Indianapolis, Indiana.

The Woman of the Year award has been given out by the NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics for 28 years and celebrates the accomplishments of female college athletes across all NCAA divisions. The goal of the program is to honor the athletics excellence, academic achievement, leadership and service of outstanding female college athletes.

Norton won NCAA Division II national titles in both the pentathlon and heptathlon during the 2018 track and field season. The senior helped ASU to a fifth place finish at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships and a Lone Star Conference outdoor title.

The Rambelles also placed seventh at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships. She was an indoor All-American in the 60-meter hurdles and long jump and an outdoor All-American in the long jump as well. She became the fifth female in NCAA Division II since 2009 to win both the pentathlon and heptathlon in the same season.

The Albany, Texas native was the high point scorer at the Lone Star Conference Outdoor Championships with 37.25 points, claiming gold in the heptathlon and 100-meter hurdles. At the Lone Star Conference Indoor Championships, she scored 32.5 points, claiming the pentathlon and 60-meter hurdles titles.

She earned several Lone Star Conference honors in 2018, including Outstanding Female Track Athlete and Female Track Athlete of the Year during the indoor season, along with the David Noble Award (Outstanding Female Field Athlete) and Female Field Athlete of the Year.

For the second consecutive year, Norton was the Lone Star Conference Fred Jacoby Female Academic Athlete of the Year and was named Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field Academic Athlete of the Year. She capped her career off by winning the 2018 Lone Star Conference Female Athlete of the Year award.
