STEPHENVILLE – The Angelo State volleyball team (22-9) will look to extend their season tomorrow as they compete in the first round of the NCAA South Central Regional. The Belles will be facing a familiar opponent in Lone Star Conference member Texas A&M-Commerce. ASU split their matchups with TAMUC this season, winning in five sets at home and being swept on the road.
The Belles will look to control the match defensively as they have all season. ASU ranks first in opponent hitting percentage and second in kills per set in the Lone Star Conference. Baleigh Allen has led the charge at the net all season, who has recorded 110 blocks in 102 sets played and ranks top five in the LSC in blocks per set. Sundara Chinn has been excellent as well, as she has recorded 86 blocks on the year, and Sophia Berg is right behind her with 84 blocks of her own. Chinn also leads the team in digs with 359 for an average of 3.18 per set. Libero Chloe Robinson and defensive specialists Makenna Hanssen and Morgan Preston have combined for 871 digs this season and all three average more than two digs per set played.
Offensively, the Belles will be led by Audrey Fragniere, who leads the team with 340 kills and averages more than three kills per set. She is coming off one of her best outings of the season as she recorded 21 kills in the match against Texas A&M-Kingsville. Sundara Chinn has been excellent as well with 267 kills of her own, and Baleigh Allen has recorded 242 on a .346 hitting percentage, which ranks second in the Lone Star Conference.
Setter Meghan Parker has played consistently well all season and is climbing the ASU record books in multiple categories. Parker currently ranks sixth in Belle volleyball history with over 3500 assists and seventh in service aces. She ranks fourth on the team in digs with 294, as well as leading the team in assists with 1139 and service aces with 50. She ranks second in the conference in assists and first in service aces this season.
The Belles have gotten strong contributions from a few other players this season, including Bailey Drum, Makenzie Griffin, and Eadara Files. Drum has recorded 103 kills and 47 digs in her 70 sets played. Griffin has 59 kills and 18 digs this season in her 34 sets played, averaging just under two kills per set, and Files has been steady in relief of Parker with 73 assists and 51 digs on the year.
Texas A&M-Commerce is coming off of a 3-1 victory in the Lone Star Conference Championship against Tarleton State. The Belles are 42-22 all time against the Lions.
