SAN ANGELO - Angelo State senior defensive lineman
Markus Jones is one of the eight finalists for the 2018 Gene Upshaw Division II Lineman of the Year, the Manheim Touchdown Club announced on Monday.
Two finalists advance from each of the four NCAA Division II Super Regions, with Jones and offensive tackle Trey Pipkins of Sioux Falls representing Super Region 4.
Jones is the Division II leader in tackles for loss this season, racking up 34 for 128 yards. The next closest defensive player is 12.5 behind him. The Fort Worth native is also No. 2 nationally in sacks this season and has broken the Angelo State career sack record and matched the school's single-season sack record.
He recorded 77 total tackles on the season, 13 quarterback hurries, forced three fumbles and recovered one. Jones also made an impact on special teams where he blocked a pair of kicks this season.
The national round of voting begins on Monday, Nov. 19 and closes on Monday, Nov. 26. The winner will be announced on Wednesday, Nov. 28. The award recipient has an invitation to participate in front of professional scouts and coaches at the East-West Shrine Game in St. Petersburg, Fla. The winner will also be recognized at the Manheim Touchdown Club's annual banquet in May.
