Mims leads comeback as Rams top Grizzlies

SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State men's basketball team came from behind to beat Adams State 92-83 and go 2-0 in the ASU Thanksgiving Classic.

The Rams are now 5-1 on the season and will now begin Lone Star Conference play on Thursday, taking on Texas A&M-Commerce in Commerce, Texas at 1 p.m.

Angelo State's leading scorer, Daron Mims, got going early in the game, opening the scoring with a three-pointer a minute in. The Rams held onto the lead for the first seven minutes of the game, going up 16-14 on a three-pointer by Antonio Singleton with 13:16 left in the opening half.

Adams State responded with a three-pointer of their own, however, and took their first lead of the game at 17-14. The Grizzlies held the advantage for almost the entire remainder of the half, never leading by more than five and trailing at 35-34 and 37-36. Each brief lead the Rams took came on buckets from Mims, who hit timely shots all night.

Mims finished with a career-high 28 points, breaking his previous career high of 22 set in February against West Texas A&M. The senior also had a pair of rebounds, three assists and a block in a team-leading 34 minutes on the floor.

When the two teams went into the locker room, Adams State held a one-point advantage.

ASU quickly took over the lead 23 seconds into the second half as Ronald Bell hit a jumper and a three-pointer while Valentine Sangoyomi got a layup in the paint. The Grizzlies would not go away quietly, however, tying the game back up at 55-all with just over 15 minutes to play.

A jumper from Adams State's Davere Creighton gave the Grizzlies the lead for the first time in the second half, and they pushed it out to a five-point margin with 12:22 left to play.

With 10:57 remaining, however, Yildon Mendoza hit a jumper in the lane to spark a quick 7-0 ASU run that included a three-pointer from Antonio Singleton and was capped off by a dunk from Mims.

Singleton was one of three other Rams to finish in double figures on the night, scoring 13 points to go along with five rebounds, two blocks and two steals. Bell also got five rebounds and finished with 10 points before fouling out early in the second half. Collin Turner had a strong night as ASU's second-leading scorer, finishing with 17 points and three assists.

The Rams never trailed or were even tied after the Mims dunk, pushing the lead to seven points on a three-pointer from Turner and building a double-digit advantage with just under five minutes to go on a jumper from Singleton.

Now in the double-bonus, ASU hit their free throws down the stretch to build their widest lead at 92-74 with just over two minutes to play before finishing out the 92-83 win.
