ODESSA, Texas – The Angelo State men's basketball team dropped its first road game of the week to No. 11/13 UT- Permian Basin, 103-74, on Thursday night.
The Rams fall to 17-8 overall and 8-7 in the conference with the loss. ASU had three score in double-figures with James Kirksey leading the way with 15 points, and Ja'Michael Brown and Daron Mims each checking in with 13 for the night. With 10 total boards on the night, Kirksey recorded his fourth double-double on the season.
Not only leading the squad in spreading the rock with eight assists, Brown also pocketed a team most four steals for the game. With three blocks, DeVaughn Jenkins headed the Rams in the category. The Falcons improved to 21-3, 13-2 LSC with the win.
Trailing 14-2 at the 15:57 mark, a Davion Cole-Johnson layup got ASU back on track and on the road to cutting the Falcons double-figure lead. With shots from Jenkins, Kirksey and Ran Tut, the Rams closed the gap to just four points (26-22) at the 8:27 mark.
A Brown steal followed by a layup from Mims with 5:07 left in the half, further cut the UTPB lead to just one (32-31). However, an ensuing lengthy Falcon run would push the UTPB lead back into double-digits. Kirksey would close out the scoring for ASU in the half as he stroked a 3-ball from downtown.
UT-Permian Basin would continue to build off its first half momentum pushing its lead to, 50-30, with 12:38 on the board. Despite big shots from Mims, Cole-Johnson, Jenkins, Tut, Kirksey and Antonio Singleton, the Rams would be unable to piece together a lengthy run of its own to close the gap for a second time.
Angelo State will now look to rebound with a game against No. 7/8 West Texas A&M in Canyon. Tip-off for this game is slated for 4 p.m. on Saturday, February 17. This game will also be brioadcasted live on 1260 KKSA with the voice of the Rams, Jeremy Bryant, on the call. Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
