COMMERCE, Texas – The No. 6 Angelo State softball team completed a three-game sweep of No. 14 Texas A&M-Commerce by winning 12-3 in a five inning run-rule game to take over sole possession of first place in the Lone Star Conference on Sunday in Commerce.
The Rambelles (41-6, 23-4 LSC) recorded 11 hits in the series finale and scored at least 10 runs for the fourth time in the last seven games. ASU won its 11th straight game and has a double-digit win streak for the second time this season. The Lions falls to 35-8 overall and 20-7 in the LSC.
"I am very happy with the way our team handled themselves this weekend Angelo State head softball coach Travis Scott said. "Being able to come on the road and beat a really good Texas A&M-Commerce team we were tied with in the standings with first place was huge. We took care of our business. Brandy Marlett looked great all weekend and our bats swung it up and down the lineup to keep the pressure on them."
After a scoreless first, Angelo State got on the board first. Brooke Mangold stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and was plunked with a pitch to score the first run. Madison Greenwell collected a RBI with a fielder's choice and Bailey Wallace made it 4-0 with a two-RBI double to right center.
The Loins were able to get one run back in the second but Brandy Marlett stranded a pair of runners to end the second inning.
The runs continued in the third for ASU. The bases were loaded and Greenwell hit a grounder to third base. The senior's speed caused an errant throw that allowed two runs to score. Wallace added her third RBI of the game with a single to right field to make the score 7-1. The junior led all hitter with three hits and tied for the team lead with three RBIs.
Marlett kept TAMUC off the board in the fourth striking out two batters. She combined to strike out 20 batters in 12.2 innings of the series.
The offense didn't stop in the fourth. Amanda Ramage started the runs with a RBI single to right center and Mangold hit a two-RBI single to right field to increase the lead to 10-1. A dropped fly ball brought home Ramage from third and Courtney Barnhill got a RBI on a grounder to extend the advance to 12-1.
The Lions would score two runs over the final two innings before the final of 12-3.
Marlett earned her 20th win of the season throwing 4.0 innings. She scattered five hits and struck out six while allowing only two runs. It would be the only two runs she gave up of the series. Makayla Corbin pitched the fifth and allowed one run on two hits.
The Rambelles take over sole possession of first place with the sweep and Texas A&M-Kingsville taking two of three from West Texas A&M.
ASU returns to the field on Tuesday with its final two road games of the regular season against St. Edward's with a doubleheader scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
