Belles face tough slate on Colorado road trip

SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State volleyball team will play six games in a span of five days this week as they trek through Colorado, first facing Colorado State Pueblo and Colorado Christian on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively, before beginning the Colorado Premier Tournament on Friday.

The Belles will face Missouri Western State and Regis on Friday before finding out their opponents for Saturday's matchups.

"I think Colorado is going to be a fun trip," Angelo State head volleyball coach Chuck Waddington said. "Arkansas Fort Smith, I feel like they're a top 25 team. But we're going up to play several top 25 teams, so I think that Friday match helped us a lot and we'll see if we can build from that on the long road trip."

Both teams the Belles are scheduled to face on day one of the Premier Tournament are ranked in the top 25 nationally with Missouri Western State ranked No. 21 and Regis in the No. 10 spots. Angelo State is just outside the top 25 with 137 total points, just behind No. 25 Tampa, who had 143.

ASU went 4-0 while playing in the Kathleen Brasfield invitational to start the season, marking the fourth straight year they have started with that record.

The team was led by Sundara Chinn, Audrey Fragniere and Meghan Parker in the opening weekend, as all three earned spots on the All-Tournament team, with Chinn being honored as the Tournament MVP.

Chinn had an all-around great start to the 2018 season, leading the team in digs with 52 as well as points with 43.5. She had a team second-36 kills with a .236 hitting percentage and added in three service aces and nine blocks.

Just one kill ahead of Chinn and leading the squad after the first weekend is senior transfer Audrey Fragniere with 37. Fragniere averaged 3.08 kills per set through the first four matches with a hitting percentage of .248.

Parker began her third season with the Belles by posting back-to-back double-doubles and averaging 9.21 assist per set. The San Antonio native also leads the team with 10 service aces and is tied for third on the team with 38 digs.

A pair of freshman defenders rank right above Parker in the dig department, with Morgan Preston ranking second on the team with 47 digs and Makenna Hanssen right behind with 38.

ASU played strong defense at the net as well, tallying 23 blocks as a team, including a team-leading 10 from Baleigh Allen. The front row and back row defenders combined to limit opponents to a measly .038 hitting percentage through the first four games.

Offensively, the Belles had five players finish the first weekend with at least 20 kills, including Chinn and Fragniere. The other three were Anna Graham, who was third on the team with 26 kills, Allen with 22 kills and freshman Sophia Berg with 21.
