DENVER – The Angelo State volleyball team bounced back from a tough loss to No. 21 Missouri Western Friday afternoon by sweeping No. 10 Regis in the nightcap on day one of the Colorado Premier Classic.
Down 23-18 in the third set against Regis, the Belles (6-2) sent freshman Sophia Berg to the service line and rattled off seven straight points to secure their first victory over a ranked opponent this season.
"We played a whole lot cleaner in the late game and that was huge," Angelo State head volleyball coach Chuck Waddington said. "They really showed some grit tonight. It's no secret that we have a young team, but to bounce back like they did against a top 10 team was gutsy and very impressive."
In the first game of the day, Angelo State took on No. 21 Missouri Western, battling three close sets in a loss.
The Belles took an early 5-3, but quickly gave it up as a four-point Griffon run put them up 7-5.
A 6-1 ASU run that included three kills from Anna Graham put the Belles in front again, but the Griffons would not go away.
Graham finished the match with a team-leading 11 kills, which also marked a season high for the Bushland native.
Missouri Western got back in front at 20-19 and held on through an extra point to secure a 26-24 first set win.
The Belles once again got on top in the second set, even taking a 10-6 lead after a kill from Sundara Chinn and a Griffon attacking error. MWU fought back again, however, using a four-point run to go upo 18-16. ASU would manage just three more points the remainder of the match as the Griffons took set two 25-19.
Set three started as well as any ASU fan could have hoped, with the Belles scoring the first five points and jumping out to an 8-1 lead.
The Griffons responded yet again, piling up a 15-4 run that gave them the lead once again as they eventually won the third set 25-19 and took the match.
After about a two-hour break, the Belles went back on the court to take on the host school and their first top 10 opponent of the season in Regis and responded to the earlier loss in a big way.
The Belles came out firing and built a quick 7-3 lead over the Rangers and then used a four-point run that included kills from Baleigh Allen and Meghan Parker to go up 14-9 and force a Ranger timeout.
Allen continued to play at a high level as she as all through the early goings of her sophomore season, hitting .563 with nine kills and tallying a team-high four blocks.
After the timeout Regis battled back to 17-16, but the Belles held onto the lead by stopping the run with a kill from Sophia Berg.
Back-to-back kills from Audrey Fragniere kept the Belles on top 23-21, and an error from the Rangers sealed the set one victory.
An early lead came yet again in set two, as ASU went up 8-3 on a kill from Graham. This time the Rangers were not let back into the match, however, with the Belles pushing forward for a 19-13 lead.
Powering through all the way to the end with another kill from Allen and the set-winner from Fragniere, Angelo State earned it largest set win of the night at 25-18.
In the final set, Regis responded, scoring the first five points and holding a 12-8 lead. The Rangers pushed further with a four-point run to go up by as many as seven before the Belles began to claw their way back.
With Regis just two points away from their first set win of the match, Angelo State really turned it on, scoring eight straight points and closing out the sweep.
The Belles will play twice more in the tournament
