Belles split Saturday matches

DENVER – The Angelo State volleyball team went 1-1 on the final day of the Colorado Premier Tournament, sweeping Saint Leo before falling in the silver bracket championship match to No. 13 West Florida.

The Belles earned their second straight sweep in the win against the Lions, but hit just .065 in the nightcap against West Florida.

ASU carried the momentum from Friday night's win over No. 10 Regis, jumping out to an early 8-5 lead against Saint Leo. The Belles did not let up, and a kill from Sundara Chinn sparked a 6-1 run that helped them push the lead to 16-9.

Chinn finished the match all over the ASU leader board with a team-leading three aces, four blocks and nine digs while finishing second on the team with eight kills.

Saint Leo kept the set close, cutting the deficit to just three at 19-16 and using a late four-point run to make the match 24-23, but Anna Graham ended the comeback effort with a kill.

Set two was more evenly matched early, and the Lions briefly held the lead at 10-9. Sparked by a kill from freshman Grace White, however, the Belles went on an eight point run. They kept the lead for the rest of the set, powering past Saint Leo 25-18.

The third and final set was almost a copy of the second set, as the Lions and Belles traded points to a 10-10 tie before ASU went on another run, this time for seven points.

Saint Leo went on a late 6-1 run in the third set with one last chance to win the match, but a kill from Audrey Fragniere secured the win.

Fragniere was the team leader in kills for the match against the Lions with 10, marking the third time this season she has reached double digits in that category.

In the nightcap against No. 13 West Florida, the Argonauts claimed the momentum early on by grabbing a quick 6-3 lead. The Belles battled back, using a block from Chinn and White followed by a kill from Graham to pull within one.

West Florida held onto their lead, however, and pushed it back out to five points at 21-16. An 8-2 run by the Belles quickly took that away, however, and briefly gave ASU a 24-23 lead in the opening set. The Argonauts scored the final three points of the match to win 26-24.

In set two, West Florida once again took an early lead and did not look back this time. Using runs of 9-1 and 5-0, the Argonauts powered through for a 25-18 set two win.

Angelo State took an early lead in the third set of the match, but gave up another 5-0 run that put West Florida on top 9-7. The Argonauts seized the momentum with that run and piled on with another 7-2 run.

Down 23-15, the Belles attempted to climb back into the match one final time with a 5-1 run, but the Argonauts closed down the win, 25-19.

The Belles will return home now, preparing to face Texas A&M-Commerce in their Lone Star Conference opener at 7 p.m. Friday night in the Stephens Arena at the Junell Center.
