Rams mount furious comeback, beat Mustangs 72-67

SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State men's basketball team mounted a furious comeback to defeat the Midwestern State Mustangs 72-67 Saturday evening at the Junell Center.

Trailing 64-47 with less than six minutes on the clock, the Rams outscored MSU 25-3 for the remainder of the game. The run started with two Ronald Bell free throws and a jumper by Kiair Crouch. Antonio Singleton knocked down two more free throws to close the deficit to twelve points. After MSU hit a free throw, the Rams went on a 17-0 run highlighted by a jumper by Crouch, a jumper by Marcel Pettway, two layups by James Kirksey, two more free throws by Crouch, and a made shot by Singleton, along with a steal each by Crouch and Kirksey. With the game tied at 65, Singleton hit two free throws to give the Rams a two point lead and then hit two more free throws thirty second later for a 69-65 lead. After two more Midwestern State free throws, Daron Mims hit a free throw and then stole the ball with under a minute left. Kirksey hit one last layup with 15 seconds left to seal the victory and close the run.

The Rams were led by Kiair Crouch, who had 21 points to lead the team in scoring for the second time in three games. Crouch hit 9-11 free throws, including several key ones in the second half. Ronald Bell finished with 14 points and eight rebounds before fouling out just before the game clinching run. Antonio Singleton finished with 11 points and four rebounds and was perfect from the free throw line, going 6-6 down the stretch. James Kirksey had another excellent all around game with nine points, five rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Marcel Pettway scored six points, including a key bucket during the 17-0 run down the stretch in the second half. He added three rebounds on the evening.

The Rams will be in action again next week at home as they will battle Tarleton State and Texas A&M-Commerce.
