Hayes Leads Rams to Victory over TSU

SAN ANGELO, Texas – The No. 23 Angelo State University men's basketball team defeated the Tarleton State University Texans, 80-71, on Saturday night. Jeremy Hayes led the offense and scored a career-high 23 points in the Rams victory.

Angelo State remains undefeated at 6-0 on the season and 2-0 in Lone Star Conference action.

In Case You Missed It:
  • ASU got off to a quick 7-0 lead, starting with Collin Turner knocking one down from behind the arc followed by two layups by Andres Ibarguen and Jeremy Hayes.
  • At the 17:21 mark, Tarleton ended the run to get on the scoreboard and trail 7-2.
  • The Rams held a nine-point lead at the 11:57 mark, 17-8.
  • With under 10 minutes to go in the first half, the Texans started to chip away at the Rams lead and claim their first lead of the game, 24-23, at the 7:22 mark.
  • Ronald Bell tied it and gave the lead back to the Rams off two made free throws.
  • The Rams closed out the first half on a 17-3 run starting at the 4:40 mark to lead, 47-32, at the half.
  • Tarleton State came out quick in the second half to score five quick points to trail, 47-37.
  • Hayes answered back at the 17:46 mark to end the Texans' run and increase Rams lead back to 49-37.
  • ASU and TSU traded off points but Tarleton could not cut in on the Rams' lead, as the Blue and Gold led by 16 points on two separate occasions at the 6:51 mark and the 5:44 mark.
  • At the 2:25 mark, the Texans trailed by nine but it was not enough as the Rams closed out the night, 80-71, to hold on to an undefeated start to the season.

"We are proud of our group for getting another home conference win. Obviously, we have a rivalry with Tarleton and so it's also good to get a win against the Texans. We want to thank our students and community for coming out tonight and helping us create a great home crowd atmosphere. We appreciate them more than words can say!"

  • Hayes led the offense and scorers with 23 points, 19 of them came in the first half.
  • Bell and Turner finished the night with 16 points apiece.
  • Ibarguen grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the defense.
  • ASU out rebounded the TSU, 40-31.
  • The team shot 44.6 percent (29-65) from the field, 41.7 percent (10-24) from downtown, and 70.6 percent (12-17) from the line.
