SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State women's basketball team climbed back from an early deficit to defeat Texas A&M-Commerce and move to 16-2 (11-1 Lone Star Conference) on the season. With the win and Eastern New Mexico's loss to Midwestern State, the Belles now have a two game lead in the conference standings with just eight games left to play.
Marquita Daniels led the Belles with 22 points, two rebounds, four assists, and a steal on 9-12 shooting from the field and 3-4 from three point range. Essence Johnson and Maria Delgado joined her in double figures on the afternoon. Johnson shot 8-11 from the field and finished with 17 points and eight rebounds. Delgado missed just one shot from the field and finished with 13 points, seven rebounds, and four assists.
De'Anira Moore, Catara Samuel, and Mikayla Blount were also strong contributors for the Belles. Moore finished with eight points and eight rebounds, Samuel finished with eight points and three rebounds, and Blount finished with seven points and five rebounds.
The game started out poorly for the Belles as they trailed 10-4 four minutes into the game. After a timeout, however, they went on a 12-0 run to regain the lead and never looked back. By halftime, they had scored 50 points and led by fourteen at 50-36. Although Texas A&M-Commerce made several small pushes throughout the second half, they could never get over the hump, and the Belles cruised to another home victory.
For the game, the Belles shot 52 percent from the field and 47 percent from the three point line. They held Commerce to 36 percent shooting and 29 percent from three.
The Belles will be in action again Tuesday evening as they will travel to Texas A&M-Kingsville to battle the Javelinas.
