PUEBLO, COLORADO – The Angelo State Rams now hold an 11-4 overall record after sweeping the Thunderwolves of Colorado State Pueblo in a four game series over the weekend. The Rams picked up decisive wins in the first day of competition, outscoring Pueblo 27-13. Five inches of snow would then coat Rawlings field overnight and prevent any games from being played on the second scheduled day of competition. ASU would then complete the series sweep on Sunday with two late game comebacks.
The Rams and Thunderwolves both put a run on the board in the first inning, but the Rams would then score two runs in consecutive innings to take a 5-1 lead in the top of the third. Pueblo would respond to the adversity with four more runs of their own to tie up the game. Aidan Welch drove in three of them with a base-clearing double. Welch would then score on an error to bring the game to 5-5 going into the fourth inning. Neither team would score in the fourth, fifth, or sixth innings, and were now facing their finally opportunity to grab a win to start the day. Nick Seginowich would make sure that the Rams would come away the victors. The junior would turn on a ball and drive it over the left field wall, bringing in Parker Bramlett and Thomas Cain to score, giving ASU a seventh inning 8-5 lead. This would be enough as Nick Coffman (2-0) would continue his mound dominance, holding Pueblo scoreless and closing out the game.
Coffman had entered the game in the third inning to relieve Andrew Croucher. He would earn his second win of the series, and of the season, as he gave up only one hit in 4.2 innings of work while striking out six.
The second game of the chilly Colorado afternoon played out in much of the same way, and produced the same result for Angelo State. The Rams would send seven batters to the plate in just the first inning, resulting in an early two run lead by the way of a Riley Peterson single up the middle that scored both Jordan Williams and Nicholas Novak. ASU would hold onto their lead until the bottom of the fourth inning when JP Hopkins would draw a leadoff walk and quickly return back to the plate as a runner brought in by a Dakota Popham homerun, tying the game at 2-2.
Nick Seginowich would once again jumpstart the offensive effort for the Rams by doubling to deep left centerfield. Michael Urquidi would then advance Seginowich with a line drive to right field that would be caught for the first out of the inning. Jackson Hardy would ultimately bring in the run to score by singling through the left side to give ASU a 3-2 lead in the fifth inning.
Angelo State would reach their final attempt to score in the top of the ninth inning trailing 5-4. With the help of a Thunderwolves wild pitch and more timely hitting from Seginowich, the Rams would score five runs in the top of the ninth, providing enough insurance to close out the game safely and close out the sweep with a fourth game score of 9-6.
