SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State men's basketball team used a balanced effort Saturday afternoon to defeat Texas A&M-Kingsville 77-72 and move to 16-5 (9-3 Lone Star Conference) on the season.
The Rams were led by Kiair Crouch, who shot 5-7 from the field and finished with 15 points and three steals. He was joined in double figures by Paul Williams, who finished with 12 points, a rebound, an assist, and a steal while drawing four charges. Every other Ram who scored had either eight or nine points. Ronald Bell and Josh Boutte both finished with nine points and seven rebounds, and Bell shot 7-10 from the free throw line. Daron Mims, Marcel Pettway, Antonio Singleton, and Collin Turner all finished with eight points. Mims made both three pointers he attempted, Pettway threw down a monster dunk in the first half, Singleton shot 6-6 from the free throw line, and Turner made four clutch free throws down the stretch.
The game was closely contested throughout. Every time ASU was able to extend the lead, the Javelinas would hit a couple shots and close it to single digits time and time again. The Rams used a 30-39 performance from the free throw line (77 percent) to salt away the win and keep the Javelinas at a distance.
The Rams will be in action again this coming weekend as they will head on the road to take on Eastern New Mexico and West Texas A&M.
