FRISCO – Despite holding a one point halftime lead, the Angelo State men's basketball team was unable to capitalize on enough opportunities down the stretch and fell to Texas A&M-Commerce 88-79 in the semifinals of the Lone Star Conference tournament Saturday afternoon.
Kiair Crouch led the Rams with 22 points, making 6-11 three pointers. He also had eight rebounds, a team leading five assists, and three steals in the contest. Ronald Bell continued his strong play of late, notching a double double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, five of which were on the offensive end of the floor. Collin Turner also had 14 points on 5-10 shooting. He also had five rebounds and four assists on the afternoon. Daron Mims was the last Ram in double figures as he finished with 13 points and five rebounds. He made three three pointers in the game.
Texas A&M-Commerce stretched their lead to double digits early in the contest, but the Rams battled back, taking a one point halftime lead on a free throw by Paul Williams. The game was tight in the second half, but the Rams did not make the necessary shots down the stretch and the Lions cruised to the finish line.
For the game, ASU shot just 34 percent from the field and 33 percent from the three point line while allowing the Lions to shooting 48 percent from the field. The Rams did outrebound the Lions 47-38.
The Rams will await their postseason fate as they are in good position for an NCAA Tournament at large berth.
