San Angelo, TX – The Rams and Falcons faced off for the final time of their conference opening series on Sunday. Angelo State came into the day with a 3-0 series advantage and was looking to collect the series sweep to start off Lone Star Conference play on the right foot.
The final game of the series started off in odd fashion with the beginning of the game including a wild throw, a wild pitch, and a pop fly that was touched by two different fielders before being caught. Despite the chaos, the Rams tallied five runs in the first three innings.
ASU had a big third inning to extend their lead to 5-0 by using a pair of big hits to drive in three runs. Jordan Williams led things off with a single and then stole second to put himself in scoring position. Lachlan Mayo rewarded Williams' baserunning by bringing him around the diamond with a double up the middle. Mayo did not have to wait long to cross the plate himself as Nick Seginowich crushed his second homerun of the series deep over the left field wall. The Canadian then obliterated his third home run of the series only an inning later to the same empty lotÂÂ behind left field and the Rams were up 8-3. The Victoria native made Angelo State Baseball history with his next at bat, hitting his third home run of the game to tie the record for most home runs hit in a single game by a Ram. He joins four others as the only members of the program to hit three four-baggers in a single game. The last time Ram fans had witnessed this feat was in 2010 when Chris Adamson hit three against Southeastern Oklahoma.
Seginowich also etched his name into another page of the same book as he tied the single game record for most RBI with his seven. The record is currently held by Adamson who plated 10 runs in the same game that he hit three home runs against Southeastern Oklahoma.
The Falcons continued to fight until the end of the game as they brought it within two runs in the fifth inning, and when they were down 14-6 in their final chance they managed to string together a few big hits to bring themselves within four runs.
With 17 hits there was plenty of action to go around for the day. Josh Elvir finished a perfect 2-2 with two runs scored, two walks, and a solo home run. Elvir is already tied for sixth in the ASU record book for home runs in a single season with 10. Four more will make him second all-time for the single season record. Lachlan Mayo also had an impressive day at the plate going 3-5 with an RBI and three runs.
The series finale ended with a score of 14-10 and the Rams exited the field with a 4-0 conference record. The Rams head to Canyon to face their conference rival West Texas A&M who are currently 22-6 overall after dropping three of their four games against Texas A&M Kingsville this weekend.
