Rams Take Series Lead With Dual Sixth Inning Explosions

CANYON, TX – The Angelo State Rams have proven themselves as a team who can do all of the basic things right: hit, throw, and catch the ball. What has separated them from their competition, however, is that they love to compete more than the other team on the field. ASU Baseball has responded after every loss they have suffered this season. In fact, they have yet to lose two games in a row. This competitive spirit was on full display Saturday as the Rams bounced back from a 12-1 loss on Friday night and swept the Buffs in the Saturday doubleheader.

Game 1

The first game of the day was what many South Central Region baseball fans expected from the series between the #11 ranked Rams and the #15 ranked Buffs – a closely contested battle that was tied up at 0-0 going into the top of the sixth inning.

Up until this point the game had been a pitcher's duel between Drew Mesecher and Trent Baker. Baker, who sits in fifth place in the Lone Star Conference in both ERA and innings pitched, had given up only five hits and kept WTAMU silent in the batter's box. Mesecher was also holding his own and had not allowed a Ram to cross the plate. That is until the top of the sixth when Angelo State scored five runs on the count of three hits and two errors. It all started with back to back singles from Jordan Williams and Lachlan Mayo who would cross the plate due to a Riley Peterson single and an error, respectively. Parker Bramlett and Parker Tadlock would both bring in a run a piece as well as Bramlett reached on an error that scored Jacob Finke who had entered to run for Josh Elvir, and Tadlock was hit by a pitch with loaded bases to score Riley Peterson. Jackson Hardy would then score on a wild pitch before the Buffs could stop the bleeding, but the damage had been done and it would prove to be too much to recover from as the Rams went on to win the first game of the day.

Trent Baker finished with a final line of seven innings pitched while giving up no runs on five hits.  Lachlan Mayo also went 3-4 at the plate and scored a run.

Game 2

The doubleheader finale was also a close game until the floodgates once again opened in the sixth inning. Fortunately for the Rams, it was in their favor this time as well.

Up until the sixth inning, the Rams had done their damage through well executed small ball.  A Nick Seginowich bunt single had brought in Nicholas Novak to score and Riley Peterson had laid down a sacrifice bunt to score Jordan Williams. In the third, Jacob Finke singled through the left side on a 3-1 pitch to bring in Lachlan Mayo. The game would follow suit once again and look to play out as expected between the two teams until the sixth inning – once again. The Buffs would watch their two run deficit turn into a 15 run unbridgeable gap as the Rams piled on 10 hits and were aided by three West Texas A&M errors.

There were nine Rams in the game that drove in at least one run, and five that drove in two.  Josh Barnett continued to terrorize LSC hitters as the San Angelo native put in five innings of work and gave up only a single run on three hits.
