KINGSVILLE – The Angelo State men's track and field team suffered a heartbreaking loss at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships, finishing in second place, one point behind champion Ashland. Ashland edged out the Rams by outscoring them by seven points in the 4x400 meter relay, finishing second to the Rams' eighth. The women's team finished ninth overall with 26 points, 38 points behind overall champion Lincoln (Missouri).
The meet came down to the very last event, the 4x400 meter relay. With the Rams holding a six point lead over Ashland, 52-46, the Rams merely had to finish fifth to clinch at least a share of the national championship. However, Ashland finished second, earning eight points, meaning the Rams had to finish at least seventh to clinch a share. They were unable to do so, finishing in eighth place and earning one point to finish with 53 to Ashland's 54.
"We came up just short on the men's side," head coach Tom Dibbern said. "Everyone should be proud of what they accomplished. Both teams accomplished their goals of being conference champion and finishing in the top 10 nationally. Congratulations to all our All-Americans and our national champions."
