FORT SMITH, Arkansas – The Angelo State Belle basketball team competed against a well-balanced Fort Arkansas-Smith Lions team, edging out a win, 73-72.
The Belles are now 14-8 overall and 11-7 in conference.
In Case You Missed It:
First Quarter
- Two layups from De'Anira Moore and Asia Davis started the first quarter off well for Angelo State as the Belles would gain an early 4-0 lead.
- The Lions would quickly retaliate and tie the game up at 4-4, but a pair of free throws from Moore would give the Belles a two point lead with 7:37 left on the clock, 6-4.
- Several made jump shots from the Lions would give Fort Smith a three point lead over the Belles, 9-6, but Angel Hayden would knock down two free throws and cut the Lions lead to one, 9-8.
- A free throw from Catara Samuel would tie the game at 9-9, and Hayden would give ASU the lead back with a made three pointer with 4:28 left on the clock, 13-9.
- Fort Smith would tie the game once again, but two made layups from Samuel and Samantha Rocha would give the Belles a four point lead, 16-12.
- The Lions would tie the game however at 16-16, leading into the second quarter.
Second Quarter
- An early foul on Moore would send her to the line where she would knock down two free throws to give ASU back their lead by two, 18-16.
- Another layup from Moore and one free throw from Samuel brought Angelo State up to a five point lead, 21-16.
- Moore would put up another layup to push the Belles lead up to seven points, but a layup from the Lions would cut it back down to five, 23-18.
- ASU and Arkansas Fort-Smith would trade points back and forth for almost two full minutes, both Sawyer Lloyd and Kinley Brown making several layups to keep the Belles lead at seven points, 29-22.
- The Lions would make a layup and another free throw to cut the Belles lead back down to four points, but a made layup from Hayden brought the Belles back to a six point lead, 31-25.
- Two free throws from Hayden ended the second quarter for the Belles as she kept the Blue and Gold in front of the Lions with a five point lead, 35-30.
Third Quarter
- Angelo States offense came out with a passion to keep their lead that for the first two minutes of the third quarter, ASU kept the Lions from scoring as the Belles would go on a seven point run, Davis making two free throws, Megan Guadian knocking down a three pointer, and Davis scoring a layup to bring the Belles to a 12 point lead over Fort Smith, 42-30.
- The Lions defense found their second wind however, keeping the Belles from scoring for two minutes as well, cutting the Belles lead down a point at time till ASU was leading only by three, but Samuel found the basket once again, making a layup and bringing the Belles lead back up to five, 44-39.
- Fort Smith would maintain control of the ball for the most of the third quarter and limiting the Belles offensive capabilities as the Lions would slowly build up to a 10 point lead at one point, until a free throw from Lloyd ended the third quarter for the Belles as ASU trailed by nine points leading into the fourth quarter, 50-59.
Fourth Quarter
- Two layups from Lloyd and Rocha brought the Belles to a seven point deficit with 8:22 left on the clock. 54-61.
- Two more layups from Davis and Samuel cut the Lions lead even further down to three points, 58-61.
- A layup from Rocha and a layup and free throw from Moore would tie the game up at 65-65 with less than five minutes left in the fourth quarter, but the Lions would hit a three to gain another lead over ASU, 68-65.
- Several key layups from Moore, Samuel, and Davis would put the Belles within one point of the Lions lead at 71-72. A foul on Davis would send her to the line where she would knock down two free throws to gain a one point lead over the Lions with one second left on the clock, ending the game for ASU, 73-72.
Key Players:
- De'Anira Moore once again was the Belles offensive power in the paint, scoring 19 points for the Belles. Moore shot 6-12 from the field and 7-7 from the free throw line. Moore grabbed eight total rebounds, four on offense and defense each, along with one assist, one block, and one steal.
- Asia Davis continues to be an offensive force the Belles can count on in the moments where it matters the most. The senior from Midwest City, Oklahoma scored 15 points for the Belles, shooting 5-9 from the field and 5-6 from the free throw line. Davis grabbed three defensive rebounds, along with one assist.
- Catara Samuel continues to play a huge role for Angelo State on the basketball court, scoring 10 points for ASU, shooting 4-13 from the field and 1-2 from the free throw line. Samuel grabbed two total rebounds, one on offense and defense each, along with three assists and two steals.
