Turner Dominates Offense; ASU Defeats TAMUK

SAN ANGELO, Texas – Collin Turner scored a career and season-high 44 points, tying for the third most points scored in a single game, to help the Angelo State University men's basketball team to an 80-73 victory over Texas A&M University-Kingsville on Thursday night. Turner finished 11-of-18 from the field, including 6-of-9 from the three-point arc, and 16-of-17 from the free throw line.

The Rams improve to 17-6 overall and 13-6 in conference action.

In Case You Missed It:
  • The Rams and Javelinas went back in forth to start the game but ASU made a run for it starting at the 17:46 mark, going on a 9-0 scoring run to take a 13-7 lead at the 16:42 mark of the first half. Turner scored seven of the points and Andres Ibarguen grabbed two points.
  • From there, the two teams battled back and forth with the Blue and Gold holding on to the lead.
  • At the 12:26 mark, Angelo State scored back-to-back-to-back three-pointers with Turner scoring six and Camron Reedus scoring three to give ASU a 27-17 lead at the 10:54 mark. The Javelinas managed to bring it back within two points after going on an 8-0 run at 27-25.
  • The Rams took the lead back up to a 10-point difference at the 4:04 and the 3:13 mark but TAMUK held on and brought the score back within single digits at halftime as ASU lead 42-36.
  • At the start of the second half, the Javelinas went on a quick 7-2 run to bring the score within one point at 44-43 but Ibarguen knocked down two free throws to give the Rams a 46-43 lead.
  • From there, both teams battled as neither team was able to grab a lead over the other until the 10:58 mark with the Javelinas taking their biggest lead of the game, 61-53.
  • Turner tied the game at 67-67 at the 5:25 mark and gave the lead back to ASU at 68-67 off two free throws.
  • TAMUK tied and took the lead back once again but it did not stick as Turner scored six straight points to increase the Rams lead to 74-71.
  • In the final minute of the game, Turner scored four of the last six ASU points to close out the game for the 80-73 victory.

"Gutsy performance from our team tonight in a big game that meant a lot to both teams. Obviously, Collin put us on his shoulders tonight and said let's go. Incredible night for him. But we also had so many other guys that made huge plays for us in this great victory like Kendrick, Burone, and Salisu. Very happy and proud of our team and their effort tonight.

Key Players:
  • Ibarguen finished with 12 points and eight rebounds. He went 100 percent from the field (5-5) and the free throw line (2-2).
  • Burone Edwards tallied eight points for the offense, going 3-of-7 from the floor, including 2-of-3 from downtown.
  • The Rams shot 47.2 percent from the field as a team and 40.0 percent from the three-point line.
