Rams Sweep LCU in Lubbock

LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 1 Angelo State University baseball team claimed a series sweep in Lubbock for the first time in school history with a 12-5 win over the Lubbock Christian University Chaparrals in the series finale on Sunday afternoon.

The Rams improve to 14-0 on the season and in the Lone Star Conference.

In Case You Missed It:
  • After one scoreless inning, the Rams got the scoring started as Nick Novak doubled to left field and Justin Lee followed behind with a single up the middle to score Novak and put ASU on the board 1-0. Jordan Williams singled to right field to push Lee to scoring position. Jackson Hardy smashed a double to right center field to score Lee and push Williams to third. With bases loaded, Josh Elvir stepped up and hit a bases clearing double down the right field line and advanced to third on an error which allowed Parker Bramlett, Hardy and Williams to score and increase the Rams lead to 5-0. Bradley Mathiowetz round out the Ram hitters with a sacrifice fly to score Elvir and give ASU a 6-0 lead.
  • At the bottom of the second inning, LCU hit a home run to end the shutout, 6-1.
  • Angelo State scored another run in the third inning off a single by Bramlett to plate Williams and increase the Rams lead, 7-1.
  • In the fourth inning, the Blue and Gold scored two runs with back to back hits. Nick Seginowich doubled to right center field to score Mathiowetz and Tyler Mendoza followed up with a single to score Seginowich and increase the Rams lead to 9-1. The Rams scored one more run in the fifth inning to lead 10-1.
  • Lubbock Christian tried to make a run on the Rams, holding ASU to three scoreless innings. LCU managed to score four runs between the sixth and seventh innings to trail 10-5.
  • At the top of the ninth with one out, Mathiowetz and Aaron Walters were walked back to back to place runners in scoring position. Seginowich stepped up to the plate and singled up the middle to score Mathiowetz and gave ASU the 11-5 lead. Mendoza allowed Seginowich to score the game-winning run after grounding into a double play to end the game at 12-5.

"Josh Barnett was outstanding on the mound today and the offense got off to a quick start. Then Jesse Meyer came in and did another great job out of the bullpen. Real proud of this team to sweep a quality program like Lubbock Christian at their place."

Key Players:
  • Elvir had another great day at the plate, going 1-for-3 and registering three RBI and two runs.
  • Mathiowetz and Seginowich each recorded two RBI and two runs.
  • Williams went 4-for-5 from the plate, plating two runs as well for the offense while four other players each scored one run.
  • On the mound, Barnett got his third win of the season after striking out six batters through 6.2 innings of work.

The Rams return home to host West Texas A&M in a four game series beginning on Friday, February 28. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
