Belles Fall In Hard Game Against No. 16 WT

SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Angelo State Belle basketball team fell against the No. 16 West Texas A&M Buffs, 56-49.
The Belles are now 12-8 overall and 9-7 in conference.
 
In Case You Missed It:
First Quarter
  • A jumper from Catara Samuel and a three pointer from Samantha Rocha quickly gave the Belles a three point lead over the Buffs in the first quarter, 5-2.
  • WT would quickly tie the game at 5-5, but a jump shot and three pointer from Samuel quickly gave the Belles a five point lead over the Buffs, 10-5.
  • A layup and free throw from Lana Marov extended the Belles lead even further to eight, 13-5.
  • The Buffs would quickly bounce back from the deficit and hold the Belles scoreless for over three minutes until a jumper from Perrine Manoury ended the scoreless streak for ASU, 15-12.
  • Two layups from Asia Davis and Samuel ended the quarter for the Belles as the Blue and Golds lead was extended back to five going into the second quarter, 19-14.
Second Quarter
  • A jump shot from Rocha and a free throw from Samuel started the second quarter for the Belles as their lead grew to six points, 22-16.
  • The Buffs defensive capabilities kept the Belles from being able to score a point for over five minutes as WT was able to cut the lead down and tie the game at 22-22, but three pointer from Samuel brought the Belles lead back up to three, 25-22.
  • Two free throws from Kinley Brown would end the quarter for the Belles as the Buffs would whittle their lead down to one heading into halftime, 27-26.
Third Quarter
  • The Buffs came into the third quarter with their second wind intact as they took the lead from Angelo State and brought their lead to eight points before Marov made the Belles first points of the quarter with less than five minutes left in the third quarter with a layup to cut the Buffs lead down to six, 35-29.
  • Free throws from Brown and Davis cut the Buffs down to five before a jumper from Rocha cut WTs lead down to three points, 37-34.
  • A layup and several free throws from WT brought their lead back up to seven to lead the Belles leading into the fourth quarter, 41-34.
Fourth Quarter
  • A layup from Brown and two free throws from Davis brought the Belles within three points of taking the lead from the Buffs with 8:04 left on the clock, 41-38.
  • A three pointer and two free throws from Davis brought the Buffs lead down to two points, 47-45.
  • Two free throws from Davis once again cut the Buffs lead down to two points as the Belles attempted a valiant comeback to take the lead the win from WT with 1:47 left on the clock, but the Buffs defense would keep the Belles from being able to score in the last two minutes of game and extending their lead to seven once again, thwarting ASUs' comeback attempt and defeating the Belles at home, 56-49.
Key Players:
  • Asia Davis led the offensive push for the Belles against the Buffs defense, scoring 14 points for Angelo State. Davis shot 25% from the field, 50% from the three point line, and 88% from the free throw line. Davis grabbed three total rebounds, one on offense and two on defense, while also grabbing an assist and a steal.
  • Catara Samuel led the Belles defensively as she grabbed eight total rebounds, two on offense and six on defense, along with two assists and three steals. Samuel scored 11 points for the Belles, shooting 29% from the field, 29% from the three point line, and 50% from the free throw line.
  • Kinley Brown stepped up as a true freshman against the long time school rival, scoring 10 points for ASU, shooting 38% from the field and 100% from the free throw line. Brown grabbed four total rebounds, two on offense and defense each, as well as one steal.
