Rams Battled for Two Wins Over OCU

EDMOND, Okla. – The Angelo State University baseball team squeaked out two victories against Oklahoma Christian on Sunday afternoon's doubleheader by scores of 5-3 and 9-8.

The Rams remain undefeated at 5-0 on the season and in conference play.

In Case You Missed It:
Game 1: ASU 5, OCU 3
  • The Rams and Eagles started off slow as both teams went scoreless through the first three innings.
  • At the top of the fourth, the bats began to swing as Jordan Williams grabbed the first hit of the day for the Rams with a single to center field.
  • With two runners on and one out, Bradley Mathiowetz singled to left field to score Williams and put the Rams on the board, 1-0.
  • The Eagles answered back with a home run by Grant Lake to tie the game at 1-1.
  • Angelo State didn't keep it tied for long as the Rams loaded the bases quick in the top of the fifth. With two outs, the Eagles made an error allowing Parker Bramlett to advance two bases and score followed by Justin Lee scoring on a passed ball to push the Rams lead to 3-1 in the fifth.
  • Holding the Eagles off in the fifth, the Rams scored another run by Lee cranking a ball over the right field wall to increase the ASU lead to 4-1.
  • Oklahoma Christian scored one run in the sixth and one run in the seventh to bring the score within one at 4-3.
  • At the top of the ninth, Bramlett singled to center field to score Thomas Cain and seal the victory, 5-3.
Game 2: ASU 9, OCU 8
  • Both teams got off to a slow start as the Rams and Eagles were tied through three innings at 0-0.
  • At the top of the fourth the Blue and Gold got to work, as Williams was sent home due to Lee being hit by a pitch to keep bases loaded and put the Rams up 1-0. Novak scored Elvir to push the ASU lead to 2-0 and kept runners on first and third. Bramlett hit a single to send Mathiowetz home and increase the ASU lead to 3-0 before the inning ended.
  • In the fifth inning, the Eagles broke up Benjamin Elder's no-hitter with a single by Brendon Bavester, giving OCU its first hit of the game.
  • With one out in the sixth inning, Bramlett walked, stole second and advanced on a passed ball to third to put himself in scoring position. Riley Peterson stepped in for Charlie Bartlett and scored Bramlett on an error by the Eagles to end the inning with a 4-0 lead.
  • In the seventh, the Rams did not slow down as Williams started things off with a single and ended up advancing all the way to third. Elvir hit a sacrifice fly to score Williams to increase the Rams lead to 5-0.
  • Continuing the scoring pattern for the Blue and Gold in the seventh, Lee singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch followed by a single by Novak to score Lee and advance the Rams lead to 6-0.
  • Bramlett tallied the last hit of the seventh inning for ASU with a single to left field allowing Novak to score to end the inning with a 7-0 lead.
  • The Eagles broke up the shutout at the bottom of the seventh inning with a two-run double to right field to trail 7-2 to attempt a comeback against the Rams.
  • Halfway through the eighth inning, Oklahoma Christian hit a grand slam to tie the game at 7-7 after trailing 7-0 and 7-2.
  • The ninth inning was a battle for the victory, as the Rams scored two runs to take the go-ahead lead at 9-7. The Eagles managed to threaten another tie with two runners on and one out as OCU scored one run to trail 9-8 but were unable to complete the comeback as the Rams claimed the victory.
Coach Brooks's Comments:
"We were very lucky to escape with two wins today. We found a way to do enough things to win but have a lot of things to work on in order to get to where we want to be."

Key Players:
  • Lee went 3-for-6 at the plate with three runs scored and two RBI with one home run.
  • Williams went 3-for-8 from batter's box with three runs scored.
  • Bramlett, Nicholas Novak, and Mathiowetz contributed to the offense scoring two runs apiece while Josh Elvir and Cain each had one run.
  • On the mound, Trent Baker went five innings striking out eight batters and only gave up one run.
  • Benjamin Elder pitched six innings, giving up two hits, no runs and struck out a season-high 12 batters. 
  • Jake Rogers got his first win of the season in the final inning, helping to hold off the Eagles in the 9-8 victory.

Angelo State returns to action for the final game of the series against Oklahoma Christian on Monday, February 10. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
