SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Angelo State men's basketball team found itself in another close battle with St. Mary's, this time hanging on to win 67-60 to split the series on Saturday night in Bill Greehey Arena.
With the win, the Rams improve to 4-6, 4-6 LSC on the season while the Rattlers fall to 2-6, 2-4 in the Lone Star Conference.
St. Mary's had a quick start to the game, jumping out to a 10-5 lead before back-to-back buckets by
Burone Edwards and
Paul Williams to tie the game.
After trading scores back and forth for a majority of the first half, the Rattlers strung together nine straight points to go up 29-22 but their run would stop there as ASU used a 12-0 run to regain the lead before heading into halftime ahead 34-33.
Angelo State shot 45 percent from the field, converting 18-of-23 from the free throw line, while the Rattlers finished 42 percent shooting. The Rams capitalized on mistakes by StMU, scoring 22 points off of 13 turnovers, and outrebounded the Rattlers 32 to 30.
After St. Mary's regain the lead to start the second half, the Rams put together another double-digit run, scoring 12 straight points with back-to-back scores from Edwards and
Elijah Moleon to lead 50-40. Angelo State would not trail for the remainder of the game.
Williams led the Rams with 20 points, his second 20-point total of the season while adding six assists and five rebounds. Behind him, Baker finished with 12 points and
Andre Nunley tallied 10 points of his own.
The Rattlers continued the fight, holding the Rams to a three-minute scoring drought before tying the game 60-60 with 49 seconds to play.
On the next possession, Baker found a deep three to break the tie and give the Rams a three-point lead before Williams forced a turnover, making two free throws to seal the victory.
Moleon finished the night with eight points while Edwards and
Devaughn Thomas each tallied six points. Thomas also led ASU in rebounds, collecting seven.
The Rams will return home next weekend as they prepare for two games against Texas A&M – Commerce beginning Friday, Jan. 29
