Rams Host St. Edward's in Non-Conference Game


SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Angelo State men's basketball schedule looks a little different this weekend after games against Texas A&M-Commerce were postponed. Instead, the Rams will face off against St. Edward's in a game on Sunday at Stephens Arena in the Junell Center.
 
Sunday's game will be a non-conference game and will tip-off at 5:30 p.m., after the conclusion of the women's game against Commerce.

The Rams picked up a series split against St. Mary's last weekend, nearly winning the first game before last-second free throws by the Rattlers lifted them past ASU. In game two, Paul Williams led Angelo State with 20 points, five rebounds, and six assists as the Rams evened the series with a 67-60 win for their first road victory of the season.

ALL-TIME SERIES: ASU leads 11-5, Last Meeting: SEU, 78-77
Angelo State leads the all-time series but the Hilltoppers have had some recent success, winning three straight meetings against the Rams. SEU edged out the Rams last season, pulling off a one-point victory in their only meeting of the season. The last win for the Rams came during the 2017-18 season, winning 106-93 at home.
 
SCOUTING ST. EDWARD'S:
The Hilltoppers have had a strong start to their season, coming into the weekend with an 8-2 overall record. SEU currently ranks third in the Lone Star Conference in points per game, scoring 85.4, while defensively, they are giving up the fifth-fewest points at 74.2. St. Edward's also ranks third in the league in field goal percentage and assists while taking good care of the ball with a plus-6.2 turnover ratio, the second-best in the LSC.
 
Of SEU's eight wins, four have come against Texas A&M International, winning a non-conference series to start the season before collecting two conference wins over the Dustdevils. In their most recent matchup, the Hilltoppers split a series against UT Permian Basin, winning game one 86-65 before falling 75-65 in game two.
 
SEU's B.J. Maxwell ranks third in the league in points per game, scoring an average of 21.6 while Logan Cook is the top rebounder in the LSC with an average of 10.3 boards per game. Daniel Venzant also ranks in the top 10 in scoring, tallying 17.5 points per game for the Hilltoppers.

Williams continues to be the scoring leader for the Rams, putting up his second 20-point performance of the season against St. Mary's. Right behind him is Sam Baker who is averaging just under 13 points per game while Devaughn Thomas leads the Rams in rebounds with 50 this season to go along with 8.9 points per game.
