Rams Continue Play on the Road, Travel to Kingsville for the Javelina Classic

The Angelo State men's basketball will continue tournament play on the road this weekend as they make the trip south to compete at the Javelina Classic, hosted by Texas A&M – Kingsville. The Rams will face Division II opponent Northwest Nazarene on Friday before playing NCCAA member Dallas Christian on Saturday.
 
LAST WEEK:
The Rams opened the 2021-22 campaign with back-to-back wins at the LSC/RMAC Challenge last week, defeating New Mexico Highlands and Fort Lewis to start the season 2-0. Devaughn Thomas led the Rams in both games, averaging 23.5 points on the weekend. ASU had several newcomers make an immediate impact as a Ram with Lathaniel Bastian, Dante Moses, and Tyrell Carroll all averaging double figures in points in the opening weekend.

SCOUTING NORTHWEST NAZARENE:
The Nighthawks started the season 1-0 in the only game they have played so far, defeating Bushnell in overtime, 101-91, in their season opener at home. NNU finished the shortened 2020-21 season with a 13-5 overall record, advancing to the NCAA West Regional Finals before falling to second-seeded Colorado School of Mines.
 
James Nelson led the Nighthawks in their win over the Beacons, finishing with a double-double after tallying 21 points and 12 rebounds. Kobe Terashima and Tru Allen each had 19 points while Christian Rose added 15 points of his own. NNU lost their top two scorers from a season ago while Nelson ranked third on the team with 8.8 points per game while Terashima was fourth at 7.3. Nelson was also the top rebounder a season ago, finishing with an average of 5.2 rebounds per game.

The Rams hold a perfect record against Dallas Christian, winning all five matchups in program history. These teams have faced each other twice in San Angelo in the last five seasons with ASU winning 109-64 during the 2017-18 season and 107-54 the season before.
 
SCOUTING DALLAS CHRISTIAN:
The Crusaders have played five games this season, holding a 1-4 record, but all five games so far have been exhibitions. DCC finished the 2020-21 season with a 10-8 overall record, going 3-4 in conference games. Dallas Christian earned a 92-90 overtime win in their most recent exhibition against York College (Neb.). Nick Erves was the leading scorer, tallying 22 points.

LEADING OFFENSIVELY:
After the opening weekend of play, the Rams led the Lone Star Conference in total offense, scoring 97 points per game. They rank third in field goal percentage (.534), and fourth in free throw percentage (.765).
 
LSC WEEKLY HONOR:
After leading the Rams in points in both games, Thomas was named the Lone Star Men's Basketball Offensive Player of the Week. Along with averaging 23.5 points per game, he collected 11 rebounds and shot 68 percent from the field.
 
DOUBLE FIGURES:
Currently, the Rams have five players averaging double-digits in points with Thomas leading the way followed by Paul Williams with 17 points per game, Bastian with 14.5, Moses with 14, and Carroll with 12 points.
 
DOMINATING THE PAINT:
The Rams are outrebounding opponents 69-59 after the first week of play with Bastian leading with 13 rebounds, averaging 6.5 per game. Thomas is second, averaging 5.5 rebounds.
