SAN ANGELO, Texas – The top-ranked Angelo State Rams picked up three quick wins over the weekend, sweeping Wayland Baptist in a three games series at Foster Field at 1
st Community Credit Union Field.
With the sweep, the Rams improve to 5-1 on the season and have now won their last four games in a row. The Pioneers, who are receiving votes in the NAIA's Top 25, fall to 6-5 on the season.
Offense has been key for ASU this season as the Rams have now tallied 74 runs in six games including 48 in the last three. They are outscoring opponents 74-11 to begin the season.
Trent Baker started on the mound in game one for the Rams, tossing a complete seven-inning game while allowing three runs off of eight hits. He tallied seven strikeouts, bringing his season total to 19 as he improves to 2-0.
Five players tallied two RBIs with
Jordan Williams leading in hits with three and
Josh Elvir in runs with three.
Parker Bramlett hit two doubles as the Rams collected 13 runs off of 13 hits to win 13-3.
Game two saw another complete game, this time from
Benjamin Elder who threw seven scoreless innings to give the Rams a 13-0 win over the Pioneers. Elder allowed only one hit through 22 batters faced and collected six strikeouts.
At the plate,
Koby Kelton capped off the day with a walk-off grand slam, hitting his first home run of the season. He finished with six RBIs on the day, collecting two hits and scoring twice. Also going yard was Elvir who hit a two-run blast earlier in the game.
The Rams exploded offensively in game three, scoring 22 runs as the Rams completed the series sweep with a 22-4 win. For ASU, 11 different players registered at least one RBI while
Reese Johnson collected a team-high of four while going 2-for-2 at the plate.
Elvir also hit his third home run of the season, bringing his career total to 34 which set a new ASU career home run record, breaking Keith Towne's record of 33 set back in 2010.
On the mound,
Jesse Meyer picked up the win after throwing four scoreless innings, allowing five hits while striking out two batters. He improves to 1-0 on the season.
The Rams will continue nonconference play tomorrow as they play a single game against McMurry at 3 p.m. at Foster Field at 1
st Community Credit Union Stadium.
