EDMOND, Okla. – In the opening match of the ITA Division II Indoor National Championship, the 13
th-ranked Angelo State women's tennis team defeated the first top-10 ranked team in program history, downing No. 7 West Florida 4-3 on Friday morning at the Edmond Tennis Center.
Not only was it the first win over a top-10 program, but Friday's win also marked the 500
th victory in head coach
Chris Bizot's 19 year coaching career.
West Florida took an early lead in the dual, securing the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots.
Ena Ovcina continued her success into the indoor championship, picking up her seventh consecutive singles victory as she downed UWF's Irene Recuenco 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 2 spot.
Down 3-1, the Belles battled back to tallying four points in the dual, picking up victories at No. 6, No. 5, and No. 3.
Virginie Becht defeated her opponent at the sixth spot, winning in straight sets 6-1, 6-4 while
Zoe Gubbels won 6-4, 7-6 at No. 5 to tie the match at three points each.
Dianela Rodriguez closed out the dual with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 victory to clinch the final point and the win for the Belles.
Angelo State will continue the Indoor National Championship tomorrow as they take on Southwest Baptist.
