No. 3 Belles Defeat MSU in Four Sets to Finish ASU Invite

SAN ANGELO, Texas – The No. 3 Angelo State Belle volleyball team defeated the Midwestern State Mustangs in four sets to wrap up the ASU Invitational, remaining undefeated in the season at 11-0 overall.
 
Angelo State grabbed an early 4-1 lead over the Mustangs in set one with kills from Grace White and Kailyn Gilbreath and an error from the Mustangs. Several kills from Sophia Berg and Elsa Lamphere extended the Belles lead to four over MSU, 8-4. A kill from White, plus a block from White and Gilbreath brought ASU to a five point lead over the Mustangs, 11-6.
 
Two kills from Berg and Nailah Gordon grew the Belles lead further to six at 16-10, but a kill from the Mustangs and an Angelo State error cut the Belles lead back to four, 17-13. A kill from Gordon brought Makenna Hanssen to serve for the Belles, where she served for two points, will Lamphere registering a kill to bring the Belles to a 21-15 lead over MSU.
 
Two back to back kills from Gilbreath ended the first set in favor of Angelo State, as the Belles defeated the Mustangs, 25-18.
 
Set two began quickly for the Belles as a kill from Gordon sent Hanssen back to serve for Angelo State, where she served for six unanswered points, registering two service aces. Gilbreath registered two kills as well to help bring the Belles to a 7-1 lead over the Mustangs. Kills from Lamphere and Berg extended the Belles lead to seven over Midwestern State, 10-7.
 
A kill from White sent Hanssen back to the service line for Angelo State, where she served for four straight points as Hanssen registered another service ace, while Gilbreath and Lamphere registered kills to bring ASU to a 10 point lead over the Mustangs, 18-8. An error on the Mustangs sent Chloe Patton to serve for ASU, where she served for three straight points, with the Mustangs registering three errors to bring ASU to a 22-10 lead over MSU.
 
A kill from Lamphere ended the second set for the Belles as Angelo State defeated Midwestern State, 25-13, to take a 2-0 set lead leading into the third set.
 
ASU quickly took a 3-0 lead in the third set with a kill from Gordon and two errors from the Mustangs, but multiple kills, several service aces, and an error from the Belles brought MSU to a 7-3 lead as the Mustangs scored seven straight points. Several kills from Gordon and a kill from Delaney Fuller brought the Belles within one point of taking the lead from the Mustangs, but MSU managed to score a point and a kill to take a two point advantage over ASU.
 
Two kills from Gilbreath and Fuller tied the game at 14-14, but multiple kills and errors from Angelo State gave the Mustangs six straight points as Midwestern State took a seven point lead over the Belles, 21-14.
 
ASU attempted a valiant comeback to take the lead, but a kill from the Mustangs ended the third set as MSU defeated Angelo State, 25-19, leading into a fourth set.
 
The fourth set started slowly for both teams as the Belles and Mustangs traded points and kills back and forth until the set was tied at 10-10. MSU grabbed two quick points off of an ace and an error from ASU to take a 12-10 lead, but a kill from Gordon sent Lindsey Ledyard to the service line for Angelo State.
 
Ledyard served for eight unanswered points as the Belles took a commanding seven point lead over the Mustangs, with Ledyard registering two service aces. Gordon registered a kill while multiple errors from the Mustangs led to Angelo State to a 19-12 lead over the Mustangs. Kills from Gordon and Lamphere, along with an MSU error, brought the Belles lead to nine points over MSU, 22-13. The Belles had three straight blocks against the Mustangs with Baleigh Allen, Gordon, and Gilbreath all registering blocks.
 
A kill from Allen and Lamphere each ended the fourth set, and the match, in favor of the Belles as Angelo State defeated Midwestern State to remain undefeated on the season, 25-16.
 
Key Players:
  • Lamphere led the Belles offensive charge against the Mustangs, registering 14 kills and scoring 14.5 points, hitting with a .281 hitting percentage. Lamphere grabbed three digs and a block assist on defense as well.
  • Patton led the Belles defensively against Midwestern State, registering 22 digs against the Mustangs. She also grabbed two aces to end the night.
  • Ledyard finished the night with 35 assists, two service aces, nine digs, two kills, and 12 points against the Mustangs.

The Belles host the Lubbock Christian Chaparrals in a two match series starting on Tuesday, March 2 and ending on Wednesday, March 3. First serve is slated for 7 p.m. for both games.
