No. 24 Rambelles Split Doubleheader With No. 19 West Texas A&M in Canyon

CANYON, Texas – The No. 24 Rambelle softball team traveled to Canyon to face the No. 19 West Texas A&M Buffs in their second doubleheader of the weekend,
 
Game One:
Ashlyn Lerma kicked things off for Angelo State as she smacked a single out to deep center field, while Ashlynn Box was walked, advancing Lerma to second with Courtney Barnhill up to bat. Barnhill smashed a double into left center for two RBI, scoring Lerma and Box to give ASU an early 2-0 lead over the Buffs.
 
Genesis Armendariz started in the circle for the Rambelles and went three up, three down in the bottom of the first inning, with the first batter grounding out to the third baseman, the second batter grounded out to the shortstop, and the last out came from a fly ball to the left fielder.
 
WT scored a run to cut the Rambelles lead to one, 2-1, but Armendariz and the Rambelle defense made quick work of the Buffs offense, as Armendariz struck the final two batters out to end the second inning.
 
Lerma walked in the start of the third inning, with Box up to bat for ASU. Box smashed a double to register an RBI and scored Lerma from second to bring ASUs lead back to two over WT, 3-1. Barnhill reached first on a fielders choice, while Box advanced to third base and into scoring position. Madison Fernandez flied out to the center fielder on a sacrifice fly, advancing Barnhill to second base on an error from the center fielder and scoring Box to bring ASUs lead to 4-1 over West Texas A&M.
 
WT took the lead from the Rambelles in the bottom of the third inning, scoring four run and registering one home run. Makayla Corbin came in to pitch relief for Armendariz, where the Belles were able to get three outs quickly afterwards, with one batter grounding out to the shortstop, the second out coming from a grounder to the third baseman, and the final out came from a fly ball to the right fielder.
 
Fernandez smashed a home run down the right field line to cut the Buffs lead down to one run over Angelo State, 6-5, but that would unfortunately end the inning for ASU as the Buffs pitcher struck out Makayla Stroud for the final out in the top of the fifth inning.
 
WT scored six runs to extend their lead to 12-5 over Angelo State in the bottom of the fifth inning, registering another home run before the Rambelles managed to get the final out on a ground ball to the third baseman.
 
Paxton Scheurer smashed a double down the left field line to start the sixth inning for the Rambelles. Keilei Garcia would be hit by a pitch and alak to first, while Scheurer would advance to second base. Unfortunately, Lerma would ground out to the shortstop for the final out, giving the Buffs another chance at bat, where they would hit back to back home runs to run rule the Rambelles in game one, 13-5.

Game Two:
Barnhill began the first inning for the Rambelles, smashing a double into left center field with two outs and Fernandez up to bat for Angelo State. Fernandez was hit by a pitch and walked to first, advancing Barnhill to second. Garcia reached first on an error by the shortstop, scoring Barnhill from second to give the Rambelles a 1-0 lead over the Buffs, and advancing Fernandez to second.
 
With Victoria Vasquez in the circle for the Rambelles in the bottom of the first inning, the Rambelle defense and Vasquez went three up, three out to end the inning, with the first batter fouling out to the first baseman, the second batter flied out to the right fielder, and Vasquez struck the third batter out looking to give ASU another chance at bat.
 
The Buffs took a 3-1 lead over Angelo State in the bottom of the second after hitting two back to back home runs before the final two outs came from two ground balls to the second baseman to bring ASU back to the batters box.
 
Barnhill got the offense rolling in the top of the third with a double down the right field line with Fernandez up to bat for the Blue and Gold. Fernandez also smashed a double, but down the left field line, scoring Barnhill and cutting the Buffs lead to one, 3-2, with Garcia to take the box for the Rambelles. Fernandez advanced to third and into scoring position as Garcia grounded out to second  with Scheurer up to bat.
 
Angelo State took the lead back from West Texas A&M as Jade Strother smacked a double deep into center field, scoring Scheurer and Fernandez and taking a 4-3 lead over the Buffs.
 
The Buffs tied the game at 4-4 with two outs before the third out came from a ground ball to the shortstop, giving the Rambelles another chance to get their bats rolling.
 
Ashton Dirner started the top of the fourth inning with a single into left center field with Lerma back to bat for the Rambelles. Lerma hit a single to the pitcher and beating the throw to first, and advancing Dirner to second. Dirner advanced to third on a passed ball, as well as Lerma who advanced to second. Fernandez hit a double into left field, scoring Dirner and Lerma for two runs and two RBI registered to extend the Rambelles lead to two over the Buffs, 6-4.
 
Garcia walked to first with Scheurer up to bat, who smashed a home run out of the park to extend the Rambelles lead to five over West Texas A&M, 9-5. Strother hit a single to the shortstop, beating the throw to first with Haylie Mitchell up to bat for the Rambelles.
 
With two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning, West Texas A&M managed to score four runs to cut their deficit to one, 9-8. Torrey Hogan came in to pitch relief for Vasquez. WT scored two more runs off of a home run to take the lead over ASU, 10-9. A ground ball to the second baseman resulted in the final out of the fourth inning, sending the Rambelles back to bat and get their offense going to retake the lead over WT.
 
Dirner smashed a double down the left field line to start off the top of the fifth inning for ASU, as Lerma came up to bat for the Rambelles. Lerma hit a single and advanced Dirner to third base and into scoring position as Box came up to bat for the Rambelles. Box registered an RBI as she smacked a single into right field, advancing Lerma to second and scoring Dirner from third to tie the game at 10-10.
 
Barnhill grounded out to the pitcher, advancing Box to second and Lerma into scoring position at third. Fernandez smashed a home run over the right center fence to score three runs for the Rambelles as Angelo State took a three run lead over West Texas A&M, 13-10. Strother was hit by a pitch and walked to first, and Avery Zeigler, who pinch hit for Mitchell, hit a double down the left field line for an RBI, scoring Garcia from third and advancing Strother to third to take a four run lead over WT, 14-10.
 
With runners on second and third and one out, the Rambelle defense threw the runner out heading to home to save a run from happening and maintaining their four run lead. WT managed to score another run, but Armendariz, in to relief pitch for Hogan, struck the final batter out swinging in the bottom of the fifth to give ASU another chance at bat.
 
Armendariz showed her skills in the circle for the Rambelles, striking out two batters while the third grounded out to the third baseman to end the bottom of the sixth inning.
 
Scheurer hit a double into deep left center, with Hatty Shope to pinch run for Scheurer. Ziegler smashed a home run over the left center fence to grow the Rambelles lead to 16-13 over WT. Dirner also hit a home run over the left field fence to give ASU a four run lead over WT once again, 17-13. Lerma hit a single down the left field line, and Box was hit by a pitch and walked to first, advancing Lerma to second.
 
WT attempted to score several runs in the bottom of the seventh, loading the bases at one point, but the Rambelles defense proved too much for the Buffs as two batters popped up to the third baseman and the right fielder, and Armendariz struck out the final batter looking as Angelo State split the series with WT, defeating the Buffs in game two, 17-13.

Up Next:
The Rambelles host two doubleheaders starting on Friday, March 19 against the University of Texas Permian Basin Falcons and ending on Sunday, March 21 against the Western New Mexico Mustangs. The games on Friday will start at 4:30 p.m. and 7 p.m., while the games on Sunday will begin at noon and 2:30 p.m.
