No 24 Rambelles Sweep Competition at Home, Defeat Mustangs 12-2 and 14-0 in Doubleheader

SAN ANGELO, Texas – The No. 24 Angelo State Rambelles swept the competition at home this weekend as Angelo State defeated the Western New Mexico Mustangs on Sunday in their doubleheader, winning game one, 12-2 and game two, 14-0. The Rambelles move to a 16-7 overall record and 8-4 in conference play.
 
Game One:
Genesis Armendariz and the Rambelle defense came to defend their home turf against the Mustangs as the first out came from a fly ball out to the left fielder, the second out from a ground ball straight at Armendariz to the second baseman covering first, and Armendariz registered another strikeout on the season as she struck the batter out looking to send ASU to bat for the first time of the day.
 
Ashlyn Lerma would walk to first and steal second shortly afterwards. Courtney Barnhill smacked a double into left center field, scoring Lerma to give ASU a 1-0 lead over WNMU. Madison Fernandez walked to first and advance to second on a wild pitch, which advanced Barnhill into scoring position at third.
 
Keilei Garcia smashed her first home run of the season over the center field fence, registering three RBI and scoring Barnhill and Fernandez to bring ASUs lead to 4-0 over the Mustangs.
 
Western New Mexico managed to put two runners on base in the top of the second, but the Rambelles defense proved too tough and were not able to score a run, leaving two runners stranded leading into the bottom of the second.
 
Haylie Mitchell walked to first, shortly stealing second base afterwards. Lerma hit a single and advanced Mitchell to third where she would be thrown out. Lerma stole second and advanced to home on the throw, scoring another run for the Rambelles to take a 5-0 lead over Western New Mexico.
 
Ashton Dirner walked to first where she would steal second with Barnhill up to bat for ASU. Barnhill cranked a single into left field to advance Dirner to third. Barnhill stole second and Fernandez walked to load the bases up for Garcia as she came up to bat.
 
Garcia smashed another home run over the center field fence, registering four more RBI and scoring Dirner, Barnhill, and Fernandez to bring ASU to a 9-0 lead over the Mustangs.
 
Western New Mexico managed to score two runs in the top of the third inning, but not before the Mustangs registered two outs as the first batter popped up to the catcher and the second batter grounded out to the third baseman. Armendariz struck the final batter out swinging and gave the Rambelles offense another chance to grow their lead.
 
Lerma walked to first once again, advancing to second as Dirner managed to catch the pitcher off guard for a single hit straight at her. Barnhill hit another single into left field to advance Lerma into scoring position at third and Dirner to second. Dirner managed to score a run to bring the Rambelles lead to 10-2 over the Mustangs before the end of the inning.
 
Torrey Hogan came in to pitch relief for Armendariz and went three up, three out as the first batter popped up to the third baseman, Hogan struck the second batter out swinging, and the final out came from a fly ball to the left fielder.
 
With two outs in the bottom of the fourth, Mitchell reached on a fielders choice where she quickly stole second base, advancing to third as Lerma hit a single to the shortstop and beat the throw. Mykayla Stroud smacked a single into left field and registered an RBI as Mitchell scored another run for ASU to take an 11-2 lead over WNMU. Barnhill hit a single into deep center field for the final run for Angelo State as Lerma crossed home plate to bring ASU to a 10 run lead over the Mustangs, 12-2.
 
Western New Mexico attempted to get their offense and bats going, but the Rambelles defense proved too much as two batters grounded out to the shortstop and third baseman, and the final out came from an unassisted grounder to the first baseman to end game one in favor of ASU as the Rambelles defeated the Mustangs, 12-2.
 
Key Players:
  • Garcia was the MVP for game one, batting two times and scoring two runs for the Rambelles, registering two hits, both of which were home runs, and seven RBI against the Mustangs.
  • Barnhill had four at-bats, scoring two runs and registering four hits, one double, four RBI, and one stolen base.
  • Lerma had two at-bats, scoring three runs and registering two hits and two stolen bases.
  • Armendariz pitched for three innings, throwing three strikeouts and facing 15 batters.
  • Hogan pitched in relief of Armendariz, pitching for two innings and throwing one strikeout against seven batters faced.
 
Game Two:
Shope walked to start the bottom of the first inning off for ASU, stealing second shortly afterwards. Dirner walked to first as well, with Barnhill up to bat. Barnhill popped up to the shortstop, and Fernandez also walked to load the bases as Garcia came up to bat.
 
Garcia singled to left center field and registered another two RBI on the day as Shope and Dirner both scored to bring ASU to a 2-0 lead over WNMU. Scheurer walked to first, advancing Fernandez into scoring position at third and Garcia to second. Stroud smashed a triple into right field, registering three RBI and scoring Fernandez, Garcia, and Scheurer to bring ASU to a 5-0 lead over WNMU.
 
WNMU left another runner stranded on base as the Rambelles defense and Corbin secured the first two outs on a throw to second from the third baseman and a pop fly to the third baseman. Corbin struck the final batter out swinging and bringing the Rambelles offense back to bat leading into the bottom of the second.
 
Shope hit a single right up the middle of the field, stealing second shortly afterward. Dirner walked, bringing Barnhill up to bat, where she smacked a single into deep center field, advancing Dirner to third on the throw to catch Shope at home, but Shopes speed showed itself as she crossed the plate before being tagged to score a run for ASU, extending their lead to 6-0.
 
Fernandez reached first on an error from the shortstop, and Garcia hit a single into right field, scoring Dirner to bring ASU to a 7-0 lead over the Mustangs. Strother registered an RBI on her sacrifice fly to the left fielder as Fernandez beat the throw to home to score another run for the Blue and Gold to take an 8-0 lead over Western New Mexico.
 
Corbin showed her pitching skills as she went three up and three out as she struck all three batters out swinging in the top of the third inning.
 
Western New Mexico left two runners stranded on base once again in the top of the fourth inning as the first out came from a fly ball out to the center fielder, the second out came from a throw to second from the shortstop, and the final out came from a foul ball that was caught by the first baseman.
 
Dirner hit a single into center field in the bottom of the fourth inning, advancing to second on Mitchells single hit up the middle of the field. Torrey Hogan came in to pinch hit for Fernandez, where she was walked to first, advancing Dirner into scoring position at third and Mitchell to second base.
 
Garcia smacked a double into right center field and registered two RBI as Dirner and Mitchell scored to bring ASU to a 10-0 lead over Western New Mexico. Strother smashed a ball deep into center field for a double and registered two RBI as Hogan and Garcia both scored a run to bring the Rambelles to a 12-0 lead over the Mustangs.
 
Burns walked to first with two outs, and Shope hit a single into center field, scoring Strother from second for an RBI and advancing Burns to second. Dirner smacked a single up the middle of the field, scoring Burns for an RBI and advancing Shope into scoring position at third to grow the Blue and Golds lead to 14-0.
 
Victoria Vasquez, pitching in relief of Corbin, struck the first two batters out in the top of the fifth inning, with the final out of the game coming from a ground ball to the third baseman, as Angelo State defeated the Western New Mexico Mustangs in game two, 14-0.

  • Garcia had three at-bats, scoring two runs and registering three hits and one double for the Rambelles. Garcia finished the day with 12 RBI against the Mustangs.

The Rambelles travel to the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex area as Angelo State faces the No. 6 UT Tyler Patriots on Friday, March 26 and the No. 2 Texas A&M-Commerce Lions on Sunday, March 28 in doubleheaders. The games on Friday will start at 4 and 6:30 p.m., while the games on Sunday will start at 1 and 3:30 p.m., respectively.
