LAWTON, Okla. – The 12
th-ranked Angelo State baseball team swept a twin bill against Cameron on Saturday, defeating the Aggies 6-0 in game one and 13-4 in game two at McCord Field.
With the sweep, the Rams improve to 26-6 overall on the year and 21-5 in Lone Star Conference play while Cameron falls to 5-27, 5-21 LSC.
GAME ONE: ASU 6, CU 0
Trent Baker pitched one of his best games of the season this year as he improves to 9-1 on the season while recording his second straight shutout. Baker threw eight innings of work while allowing only two hits and striking out a season-high 13 batters in the process.
Josh Elvir brought in the first run of the day, hitting a sacrifice fly to center field to score
Jackson Hardy and give the Rams an early lead. Angelo State added another run in the second as
Thomas Cain hit a sacrifice bunt to bring in Nick Novak who led the inning off with a single.
After three scoreless innings by both squads, the Rams picked up a run in each of the last four innings.
Reese Johnson singled with a bunt to score
Jordan Williams in the sixth while Novak hit an RBI double to right field in the seventh. Cain brought in another run off a bunt before
Aaron Walters hit a solo home run to right field.
Connor Hart pitched one inning of relief, allowing zero hits and one walk to finish the game.
GAME TWO: ASU 13, CU 4
The second game of the day saw much more offense as the Rams once again took an early lead in the first inning as
Nick Seginowich hit a triple down the right-field line to score Hardy.
The Rams tallied four runs in the second inning beginning with a fielder's choice by Cain followed by a two-RBI single by Hardy. Seginowich notched his second RBI of the game with a double to give ASU a 5-0 advantage.
Benjamin Elder started on the mound for ASU, tossing 7 2-3 innings while finishing with four runs off of six hits and 11 strikeouts.
Jake Rogers threw 1 1-3 innings without allowing a baserunner and finished with two strikeouts.
Hardy added to his RBI total in the fifth inning, hitting a double to left field for two more runs to finish the game with four RBIs off three hits. The Rams took an 8-0 lead in the sixth after Williams singled to right field, scoring Walters.
The Aggies found some life in the bottom of the eighth inning, tallying four runs capped off by a two-RBI single.
ASU closed out the game with three extra-base hits in the top of the ninth inning to score five runs including RBI doubles from Novak and Williams followed by a triple from Johnson.
The Rams will finish off the series against the Aggies tomorrow with a single game beginning at 1 p.m.
