CANYON, Texas – The 10
th-ranked Angelo State baseball team fell in game one of the series against No. 5 West Texas A&M, losing 9-1 at Wilder Park on Friday night.
The Rams move to 20-4 overall on the season and 15-4 in the Lone Star Conference while the Buffs improve to 25-3, 22-2 in LSC play.
Both pitchers were locked in to start the game, combining for only one hit through the first two innings of play.
The Buffs broke the tie in the bottom of the third inning, brining in the first run off a triple to right center before a single made it 2-0. WT added three more runs in the fourth and one more in the fifth to take a 6-0 lead.
Angelo State found some life in the sixth inning as
Thomas Cain got on base with a bunt single before advancing to second on an error by the Buffs. With two outs in the inning,
Josh Elvir got the Rams on the board with a single through the right side to score Cain.
Trent Baker started on the mound for ASU, moving to a 7-1 overall record on the season while allowing five runs off eight hits.
Jake Morgan tossed three innings of relief, allowing only one hit with three strikeouts.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, WT added three more runs, scoring two off a single up the middle before scoring the final run on a wild pitch.
The Rams and Buffs continue the three-game tomorrow at Wilder Park with first pitch slated for 7 p.m.
